Ans: Mumbai is 1400km away from Delhi. The states through which one would pass while travelling from Mumbai to Kashmir are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

(ii) How are the houses in Mumbai different from Manali?
Ans: In Manali, the houses are made up of wood, which is found in hilly areas. In Mumbai, the houses are made up of cement, bricks, glass, etc.

(iii) Why is Ladakh called a cold desert?
Ans: Due to the high altitude, it is freezing cold and dry in Ladakh. The air is so thin that the sun’s heat can be felt intensely. In summer, the temperature during the day is just above zero degrees and the night temperature is much below -30 degrees. In winter, the temperature remains as low as -40 degrees most of the time. The rainfall in this region is low. It is as low as 10 cm annually. This is because it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.

Ans: As there were no windows on the ground floor; hence, the ground floor was protected from the cold winds. Thus, in order to protect them from the icy cold winds of the winter season, they live on the ground floor.

Ans:The Changpa graze their goats at higher and colder places so that the goats have more and softer hair (fur). They stay high up on these mountains in very difficult conditions because that is where these goats can live. This is their life and their livelihood.

(viii) Why do the houses in the mountains have sloping roofs?
Ans: Sloping roofs are standard on all houses because water drains on a sloping roof better than it does on a flat roof. This is especially true in areas of snow where it would accumulate to the point that the weight of the snow could collapse the roof.
