Q.1. Read the passage given below :
Many are familiar with the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works and songs. One may well ask: Is there a central theme in Tagore’s works? There is a central theme, and that is his love for freedom and nonconformity which is evident in his works. Apart from being a literary genius, have you ever wondered what else did he love?  Have you ever thought of tasting the bard’s favourite dishes?
Now Kolkata can boast of a cafeteria-cum-restaurant, ‘Cafe The’, where people can get a taste of Tagore’s culinary indulgences–all under one roof. It was conceived by Ratikanta Basu, who undertook a lot of research to make it a reality.
The restaurant is located on Ho Chi Min Sarani in south Kolkata and is the first cafe-cum restaurant in India that is exclusively dedicated to Tagore cuisine.
Tagore would encourage the ‘thakurs’ (cooks) in his ancestral palace in the northern part of the city to introduce variations in the platter, by including local versions of continental and Peshawari cuisine. Thus, the cross over culture ensconced silently in the kitchens of Thakurbari was launched, much before the clamour for cross-cultural cuisine actually started.
The poet’s innate wanderlust took him to places like Italy, Spain, England, Turkey, and he imbibed the food traditions of the respective countries. Since he was exposed to both oriental and continental cuisine, a penchant to blend the two forms came naturally.
There are not any documents to support that Tagore was a die-hard food lover. But he actually was one, and whenever he attended a lunch or dinner abroad, he used to collect and bring back the menu cards.
A part of the menu card will be a facsimile of the menu laid out for the dinner party hosted by Indian society, London, in 1912 to felicitate Tagore on the occasion of the publication of Gitanjali, a collection of his poems. Even the decor of the cafe in south Kolkata has been designed to suit the ambience with large portraits of Tagore at various lunch and dinner parties across the world, his framed write-ups on food, of course softly played Tagore songs.

Q. 2. Read the passage given below:

Papaya is the healthiest fruit with a list of properties that is long and exhaustive. Papaya favours digestion as well as cures skin irritation and sunburns. You can munch on it as a salad, have it cooked or boiled or just drink it up as a milkshake or juice. The most important of these virtues is the protein-digesting enzyme in the milky juice. The enzyme is similar to pepsin in its digestive action and is said to be so powerful that it can digest 200 times its own weight in protein. It assists the body in assimilating the maximum nutritional value from food to provide energy and body-building materials.

Papain in raw papaya makes up for the deficiency of gastric juice and fights excess of unhealthy mucus in the stomach, dyspepsia and intestinal irritation. The ripe fruit, if eaten regularly, corrects habitant constipation, bleeding piles and chronic diarrhoea.

The juice, used as a cosmetic, removes freckles or brown spots due to exposure to sunlight and makes the skin smooth and delicate. A paste of papaya seeds is applied in skin diseases like those caused by ringworm. The black seeds of the papaya are highly beneficial in the treatment of Cirrhosis of the liver caused by malnutrition, alcoholism, etc.

A tablespoon of its juice, combined with a hint of fresh lime juice, should be taken once or twice daily for a month. The fresh juice of raw papaya mixed with honey can be applied over inflamed tonsils, for Diphtheria and other throat disorders. It dissolves the membrane and prevents infection from spreading. The nutrients in papaya have also been shown to be helpful in the prevention of colon cancer. Papaya’s fibre is able to control cancer-causing toxins in the colon and keep them away from the healthy colon cells. In addition, papaya’s folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E have each been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer. These nutrients provide synergistic protection for colon cells from free radical damage to their DNA. Increasing your intake of these nutrients by enjoying papaya is an especially good idea for individuals at risk of colon cancer.

Ans: Today, my English paper finished early. While waiting to submit the paper, I had a nice time observing an army of ants on the right-hand side wall of the classroom. A red-headed fat ant seemed to be the commander and was ordering the rest of the ant army. Then, they started moving in a disciplined manner. I began to wonder about the ants and I was curious to know more about them. After submitting my answer sheet, I reached my home and began to search through books. While searching, I came to know that ants are social insects, which means that they live in large colonies or groups. Depending on the species, ant colonies can consist of up to a million ants.

There are three kinds of ants in a colony. The queen, the female workers and the males. The queen and the males have wings while the workers don’t have wings. The only ant that can lay eggs is the queen ant. Ant colonies have soldier ants that protect the queen, defend the colony, gather or kill food and attack enemy colonies in search of food and resting space. Undoubtedly, ants have a very disciplined and regular life.

‘FOR A DROP OF WATER’

It was on the 25th of June last year. I can’t forget the day. It was an excessively hot day. The summer was at its peak. It seemed as if the fire was pouring down from the sky. Mother earth was ailing for want of water. Not a bird or animal was visible in the open. There was not a stir of air anywhere. Not even a leaf was moving. The atmosphere was stuffy and suffocated.  To add to our troubles, there was no electricity. It also resulted in the betrayal of water taps in addition to the fans and coolers. My brother’s body was burning with blistering heat. He couldn’t even cry as his throat was absolutely dry. There was not even a single drop of water in taps as well as in the storage. All of us were very thirsty but at that time, we were much troubled with seeing his miserable condition.

I went out of the house. At the corner of our lane, there was a departmental store. I went there in the hope of getting an ice-pouch or a water bottle. But it was not available at any cost because there had been no water supply for the last 24 hours. My brother’s uneasiness was getting unbearable with every moment. He was becoming excessively impatient and restless. His forehead was burning like a hot oven. My mother started weeping after seeing his condition.

Suddenly my father, who had gone to another city returned. He had the habit of carrying a water bottle with him. Perhaps, God made my father’s entry at the right moment. Immediately, my brother drank some water, which prevented him from fainting. Then we took him to the hospital for further treatment.

That day onwards, I never wasted even a drop of water, for even a drop can save someone’s life.

Detailed Answer: The toothbrush was the thing that always haunted the author while travelling. He had to unpack all his things to search for the toothbrush. He put the things back one by one and held everything up and shook it. At last, he found it inside a boot.
(iii) Albert Einstein left his school because he was not happy with the education system. He was not at ease with the strict regimentation of the school. He felt suffocated because of which he decided to leave school.

(ii) Though his science teacher was an orthodox Hindu, he broke the social barriers and mixed with other religions and communities. He invited Abdul home and served him meals and even sat and ate with him. On the contrary, his wife was conservative and refused to serve Abdul.

(iii) The man in the shrine rescued the lost child. He lifted him up in his arms and tried to soothe him. He took him to the nearest roundabout swing and offered to buy him flowers, balloons and sweets.

Ans: A. (i) The Guru's wisdom was that there was no justice in the kingdom of fools and due to the unpredictable behaviour of the fools, he wanted to leave the kingdom at once. The disciple remembers these words when the king decided that the disciple was the suitable person for execution was weak.
(ii) While going to Saharanpur, Toto behaved well. When grandfather was producing his ticket, Toto suddenly poked his head out of the bag. He gave the ticket collector a wide grin. The ticket collector insisted that grandfather must buy the ticket for the pet. Thus, the monkey proved to be a big problem for their grandfather.
(iii) Value Points :

Detailed Answer: Jerome, the narrator, took pride in himself in his packing. When, he along with his friends, George and Harris decided to go on a holiday, he offered to do the packing as he felt it would be an easy task.

(i) Kezia avoided her father because according to her, he was an emotionless person. He never spoke to Kezia lovingly and calmly. He scolded Kezia and reprimanded her for making mistakes. Kezia stammered in front of her father since he was a very huge and giant-like figure too far-fetched from the image of a father full of warmth and affection.
(ii) With a wide mouth, he started at the sight of ‘burfi’. Later, he was attracted to a garland of Gulmohar and was carried away by the rainbow glory of the coloured balloons. He wanted them all but, on the other hand, he also knew the answer of his parents. So, he convinced himself and did not ask them for anything. Finally, he made a bold request for going on the roundabout. As he turned to get their reply, he could not find them behind him.
(iii) Value Points: The writer’s wife loved Bruno deeply. After he returned, a special home was made. Straw was placed inside the box with some playthings.
Detailed Answer: The author’s wife loved Bruno deeply and missed him very much. So Bruno was driven back to Bengaluru. An island, 20 feet long and 15 feet wide surrounded by a dry moat was made for Bruno. He was kept there in a wooden box with some straws in it. His toys were also put back for him to play with.
