Ans. The Wise Parrot Long ago, a big ship sank into the sea. Many people travelling by this ship were drowned with it. Some people managed to save their lives by swimming to a nearby island. That small island was not inhabited. So it became very difficult for those people to live there. They had to live on wild fruit and fish. They all were impatiently waiting for some ship passing that way. One of those people was Mr David, a soldier, who had lost one leg in the war. Mr David had a parrot as his pet. That parrot was very naughty. He made noise all the time. So nobody liked him. The people remained annoyed with him. One day, a ship was passing by that island. When the people noticed the ship, they started shouting and signalling. But as ill luck would have it, the ship didn't notice them and kept moving forward. Mr David thought of a plan. He inserted his handkerchief into the beak of his parrot and asked him to fly towards that ship. When the parrot reached the ship, he sat near a member of the crew. Then he flew towards that island. After a few minutes, he came back to the ship and then again flew towards the island. He repeated this process again and again till the man realized what the parrot wanted to tell him. The man realized some people needed their help. He told the Captain of the ship about it. They turned their ship towards the island. The people started shouting with joy when they saw the ship coming towards them. They thanked the parrot for helping them and appreciated him for his wisdom. Mr David felt proud of his parrot.

Ans. Celebration of Diwali Last year on October 4, all the members of my family were decorating our house to celebrate the most long awaited festival, Diwali. We were going to celebrate this festival with our father after a long gap of six years. My heart was filled with excitement to meet my father after such a long period. My father worked in the army. He could not get leave during these years. So each and every member of my family was waiting for him impatiently. Mother was preparing his favourite dishes. My sister was making 'Rangoli in the courtyard and I was decorating the house with lightings. Just then, our landline phone rang. It was a call from the army headquarters. We were told that Pakistani army had infiltrated in Indian territory. So India was in a state of war with Pakistan. My father was deputed at the border with other army men. The news of war and the cancellation of my father's leave left us stunned. A few minutes before we were filled with pleasure. But now we were all grief-stricken. My little sister started crying even. But my mother consoled us saying, "Don't cry, my children. Your father will come victorious after chastening the enemy. Our India's victory over the enemy will be our Diwali in the true sense." These words of my mother gave us a lot of courage. We all hugged each other tightly and started praying for the Indian soldiers who lay their life for the safety of their nation.

The youngers also touched her feet and received her blessings. All guests and relatives had brought special gifts for her. The grandmother's face sparkled with smiles. All danced to the tunes and songs of the DJ. A special photographer had been arranged for clicking this memorable event. As a white candle in a holy place, so was the beauty of our grandmother's face.

He muttered some 'mantras'. Balbir had become unconscious by now. The snake charmer could not save him. Balbir died a painful death.

Raju's heart sank as he neared the door. All eyes turned towards him. "What has happened ?" Raju asked one of them. "Get in, child," said the other. "You'll know."When Raju got into the house, he saw three policemen there. His granny was lying in bed and she was bleeding. On seeing Raju, her eyes lit up. "Thank God, my Raju was not there at that time," she said, "or those rascals would have killed him." A neighbour told Raju that some robbers had entered the house and wounded his granny when she refused to give them the keys. Just then, Raju's mother had come in and pressed the burglar alarm. The robbers had to run away without taking anything.

Now it was a pleasant surprise for Sunil to see his old friend so suddenly after such a long time. "O you Nitin," said Sunil, and the two gave each other a big long hearty hug. Since Nitin used to come to their house about a decade earlier also, it did not take them long to recognise him. When Nitin bowed to them to touch their feet, they blessed him. They expressed their happiness to see that Nitin had now grown up into a handsome young man, and asked him if he had got married. Nitin smiled it away saying that he was yet a child. He said that he had come to the town on a business engagement and would be going back in the evening. The two friends spent the whole day together, sharing their old memories.

Just then, he remembered that he had not bought the ticket. But now the train had caught speed and he could do nothing. He knew travelling without ticket was an offence. As soon as the train stopped at the next station, he saw a travelling ticket examiner and requested him to issue him a ticket for Delhi. The ticket examiner asked him many questions. He wanted to know why Karan had not got his ticket before boarding the train. Karan told him the whole truth. The TTE was a very kind fellow. He charged from Karan the due fine and the actural fare. He gave him a receipt for that amount. Now Karan felt easy at his heart and did the rest of his journey reading a book on 'How to Improve Your Memory' by Dale Carnegie.

Ans. A Ghastly Murder Ravi was watching TV and there was a breaking news : 'an old lady has been found murdered in...' Ravi at once knew that it was Mrs Chopra's house. She was an old lady who lived all alone after the death of her husband. She had an only daughter who was settled in Jalandhar after her marriage. Ravi at once ran to the spot and found a large crowd of people already gathered there. A few policemen could also be seen in the vicinity. The police were making their investigations and nobody was being allowed to go into the house. The murder came to light when the housemaid came for her daily cleaning and washing. The door of the house had been broken open and the old lady was lying in a pool of blood. She cried in alarm and the people gathered there. The police were informed and a team of police officials soon reached there. Nothing in the house had been touched. Clearly, it was not a case of robbery. They are still groping in the dark to find some clinching clue.

Ans. On Losing the Way Raghav was staying at a guest house along with his friends during the summer holidays. It was in Nainital. He left all alone without telling any of his friends. For quite some time, he kept going about the bazaar, enjoying the cool air of the hills. He realised that he was getting late only when the shopkeepers started switching off the lights and pulling down the shutters. Now it became dark all around and Raghav walked fast to get back to the guest house. But on not finding himself anywhere near the guest house even after half an hour, he realised that he had lost his way. There was no one on the street who could tell him the way. Raghav was filled with fear lest he should have to pass the night outside in the cold night. But just then, he saw a watchman coming down the street, beating his lathi on the pavement stones. When Raghav asked him the way to his guest house, the watchman laughed in his typical Nepali style. He said that Raghav was standing at the very back of that guest house. The main gate was on the other side which could be reached through a side lane. Raghav thanked the watchman and was soon in his room in the guest house. His friends were already asleep.
