Chapter Notes: Mind Your Safety

A boy named Nitya was riding a cycle. He applied sudden brake, fell down and hurt his knees. He was in pain. Accidents are painful. Nitya got hurt because he was not careful about his safety.

We should follow safety rules so that we don't get hurt.

Safety at Home

We feel safe at home. But, if we are not careful, we can hurt ourselves even inside our home.

• Do not play with electric wires and plugs; you may get a shock.
  
• Never play with sharp items like a knife, scissors or cutter; you may receive cuts on your body.
  
• Do not try to climb the walls or the shelves of your kitchen; you may fall down.
  
• Do not leave your things like your books or toys on the floor; you may trip over them.
  
• Never play with fire or handle hot items; you may get burns or blisters.
  
• Never eat or taste medicines just for fun. Always have them under an adult's supervision.
  

Safety on the Road

• Do not run or play on the the road. Always walk on the footpath.
  
• Hold your elder's hand while crossing a road.
• Cross the road only at the zebra crossing, or a subway (if there is one).
  
• Cross the road only when the traffic light is red and the traffic has stopped.
  
• Before crossing a road, first look to your left and then to your right, and then, again to your left. If there is no traffic coming from either side, only then cross the road.
  

Safety While Travelling

• Wear a helmet while riding a bike or a cycle.
  
• Do not take out your arm or head from inside a moving vehicle.
  
• If waiting to board a bus, stand in a queue and wait for your turn.
  
• Do not push others or break the queue.
• Do not stand inside a moving vehicle without holding onto something.
  
• Wait for the vehicle to stop completely before getting on or getting off it.
  

Safety on the Playground

• Play inside a park or playing area only.
  
• Do not play on swings that are not in good condition.
  
• Do not climb the slides from the front side.
  
• Do not get close to a swing if it is being used by someone else.
• Do not play in the dark or lonely places, on stairs or near open pits.

If you or someone else gets hurt, do not panic. Call an adult for help. They can give immediate help to the person who has hurt himself/ herself, before the doctor arrives.

Do you know

• It is not safe to talk to strangers or accept things like sweets or toys from them.
• The help or treatment provided for immediate relief from an injury is called first aid.
