Chapter Notes: Weather

What is Weather?

Weather is what's happening in the sky. If you look out the window, you might see the sun shining, clouds in the sky, or rain falling down. The weather can change from day to day. It could be a sunny day where you want to play outside, or it might be rainy, so you need to wear a raincoat and boots if you go out. Weather is all about what's going on in the air and sky where we live.

Seasons

If the weather remains the same for a long period of time, it is called a season. In India we have five seasons:
Spring, Summer, Monsoon, Autumn and Winter.

  1. In summer : We have hot sunny days.
  2. In winter : We have cold days.
  3. In spring : The weather is nice, lots of flowers and butterflies beautify the garden glory.
  4. In monsoon : It rains sometimes heavily.
  5. In autumn : The leaves on trees become yellow and fall. In autumn, it is dry and warm.

Once Again!

  1. We wear cotton clothes on a hot day
  2. We wear woolen clothes on a cold day
  3. We use umbrellas on a rainy day.
  4. We sit inside the house on a windy day.

FAQs on Chapter Notes: Weather

1. What are the different types of weather and how do they form?
Ans. Weather includes sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, and snowy conditions, each formed by different atmospheric changes. Sunshine occurs when the sky is clear, while clouds form when water vapour condenses in the air. Rain happens when water droplets in clouds become heavy and fall. Wind results from air movement caused by temperature differences. Understanding these weather patterns helps students observe daily atmospheric changes in their environment.
2. Why do seasons change and what causes hot and cold weather?
Ans. Seasons change because Earth's tilted axis affects how directly the sun's rays reach different regions throughout the year. When your area tilts toward the sun, it receives more direct sunlight, creating hot weather and summer conditions. When it tilts away, sunlight spreads over a larger area, causing cooler temperatures and winter. This continuous tilt rotation creates the cycle of seasons students experience annually.
3. How can you tell if it will rain by looking at the sky and clouds?
Ans. Dark grey or black clouds indicate rain is likely, while white fluffy clouds usually mean fair weather. Heavy, thick cloud cover that blocks sunlight strongly suggests rainfall approaching soon. The sky becoming darker and wind increasing are additional signs of incoming rain. Students can develop weather prediction skills by observing cloud colour, thickness, and sky appearance before actual rainfall occurs in their locality.
4. What is the difference between weather and climate for Class 1 students?
Ans. Weather refers to daily atmospheric conditions like temperature, rain, or wind that change frequently throughout the day or week. Climate represents the long-term weather pattern of a region over many years, showing what weather is typically expected. Weather changes quickly-it might be sunny today and rainy tomorrow-while climate remains relatively consistent. Understanding this distinction helps young learners grasp why some places are always hot or cold.
5. What should you wear and do to stay safe during different weather conditions?
Ans. During hot weather, wear light-coloured, loose clothing and drink plenty of water to stay cool and hydrated. In cold weather, layer clothing with sweaters and jackets to maintain body warmth. During rainy conditions, use umbrellas and wear waterproof shoes to stay dry. Windy days require holding onto things securely to avoid being blown away. Recognising weather patterns helps students prepare appropriately and develop weather safety awareness.
