Addition Class 2 Notes Maths

Introduction

  • Addition is like putting things together to find out how many you have in total.
  • Imagine you have 3 apples, and your friend gives you 4 more apples. How many apples do you have now?
  • Let’s find out! 3 apples + 4 apples = 7 apples!
  • That's what addition does—it helps you count everything when you put things together.
  • Also, you should know that ‘+’ sign is used as a symbol of addition.
  • Now, let’s explore some fun ways to add numbers!

Addition of Three 2-Digit Numbers

Let's learn the addition of three two-digit numbers by the example:

Example: Add 36, 24, and 25.

We add three numbers in the same way as we add two numbers.
Step 1. Arrange the numbers in the columns of tens and ones.
Step 2. Add the ones.

6 ones + 4 ones + 5 ones = 15 ones
= 1 ten + 5 ones
Write 5 in the ones column and carry over 1 ten to the tens column.

Step 3. Add the tens.
1 ten (carried over) + 3 tens + 2 tens + 2 tens = 8 tens
Write 8 in the tens column.
So, 36 + 24 + 25 = 85.

Addition of Larger 2-Digit Numbers

Example: Find the sum of 85 and 49.

Step 1. Arrange the numbers in the columns of tens and ones.
Step 2. Add the ones.
5 ones + 9 ones = 14 ones = 1 ten + 4 ones
Write 4 in the ones column and carry over 1 ten to the tens column.
Step 3. Add the tens.
1 ten (carried over) + 8 tens + 4 tens = 13 tens = 1 hundred 3 tens
Write 3 in the tens column and 1 in the hundreds column.
So, 85 + 49 = 134.

Example: There are 28 books on one shelf and 24 books on the other shelf. How many books are there on both shelves?

Number of books in one shelf = 28

Number of books in the other shelf = 24

Therefore, number of books in both the shelves= 28 + 24 = 52.

Method 2: Using the Short Form

Write the numbers in column form as shown

Addition Class 2 Notes Maths

Example: Add 348 and 125.

Step 1. Add the ones.

8 ones + 5 ones = 13 ones = 1 ten + 3 ones

Write 3 under the ones column and carry 1 ten to the tens column.

Step 2. Add the tens.

1 ten (carried over) + 4 tens + 2 tens = 7 tens

Write 7 under the tens column.

Step 3. Add the hundreds.

3 hundreds + 1 hundred = 4 hundreds

Write 4 under the hundreds column.

So, 348 + 125 = 473.

Carrying from Ones to Tens and from Tens to Hundreds

Let us add 394 and 528

Method 1: Using the Expanded Form

Example: Add 693 and 278.

Step 1. Add the ones.

3 ones + 8 ones = 11 ones = 1 ten + 1 one

Write 1 under the ones column and carry 1 ten to tens column.

Step 2. Add the tens.

1 ten (carried over) + 9 tens + 7 tens = 17 tens = 1 hundred + 7 tens

Write 7 under the tens column and carry 1 hundred to the hundreds column.

Step 3. Add the hundreds.

1 hundred (carried over) + 6 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 9 hundreds

Write 9 under the hundreds column.

So, 693 + 278 = 971.

FAQs on Addition Class 2 Notes Maths

1. What is the process for adding three 2-digit numbers together?
Ans. To add three 2-digit numbers, first align the numbers vertically by their place values (tens and units). Start by adding the units place together. If the sum is less than 10, write it down. If it's 10 or more, write down the unit digit and carry over 1 to the tens place. Next, add the tens place, including any carry from the units addition. Write down the final sum, and that will be the result of adding the three 2-digit numbers.
2. How do you add larger 2-digit numbers effectively?
Ans. To effectively add larger 2-digit numbers, follow the same steps as with smaller numbers. Align the numbers by their place values, starting with the units. Add the units first; if the sum exceeds 9, carry over to the next column. Then, add the tens place. Ensure to include any carry from the previous step. This method helps in organizing the addition process and minimizes mistakes.
3. What are the steps for adding 3-digit numbers without carrying?
Ans. When adding 3-digit numbers without carrying, align the numbers by their place values (hundreds, tens, and units). Add the digits in each column separately. Since there is no carrying, simply write down the sum of each column as it appears, regardless of whether it exceeds 9. This method allows for straightforward addition without the need to adjust for carry-over values.
4. How do you handle carrying when adding 3-digit numbers?
Ans. To handle carrying when adding 3-digit numbers, align the numbers by their place values. Begin with the units column; if the sum exceeds 9, write down the unit digit and carry over the tens digit to the next column. Repeat this for the tens column, adding any carry from the units column. Finally, add the hundreds column, including any carry from the tens column. The result will be the total of the three 3-digit numbers.
5. Why is understanding addition important for math proficiency?
Ans. Understanding addition is crucial for math proficiency because it forms the foundation for more complex math operations such as subtraction, multiplication, and division. Mastering addition helps develop problem-solving skills and numerical fluency, which are necessary for tackling real-world scenarios involving finance, measurements, and data interpretation. Additionally, a strong grasp of addition enhances confidence in handling mathematical challenges.
