Synonym - A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language. Synonyms help you avoid repetition and choose words that fit the tone and meaning you want to express.
Antonym - An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. Knowing antonyms helps you understand contrasts and strengthens vocabulary for comprehension and expression.
Some words have many synonyms that differ slightly in meaning or register (formal/informal). Choose the synonym that best fits the context. Likewise, antonyms can be direct opposites (e.g., good vs bad) or relative opposites depending on context.
Vocabulary questions in tests typically appear in two main forms.
Generally, a word is provided followed by four alternatives. Choose the word nearest in meaning to the given word.
Example: Choose the correct synonym of the given word.
IMPLICATE
(a) Include
(b) Entreat
(c) Suggest
(d) Imply
Solution: The word 'Implicate' may be used in a sentence as: The man implicated him falsely in the case. Clearly, the word means 'involve' or 'include'. Hence, the answer is (a).
Generally, a word is provided followed by four alternatives. Choose the word which is opposite in meaning to the given word.
Example: Choose the correct antonym of the given word.
OBSCURE
(a) Pedantic
(b) Implicit
(c) Explicit
(d) Obnoxious
Solution: 'Obscure' means 'secret' or 'not clear'. So, the antonym would be 'Explicit.' Hence, the answer is (c).
If you do not know the exact meaning of the given word, imagine a context in which the word might be used. Visualising the situation often reveals the sense of the word and helps you select the nearest option.
For example:
MAGNIFY
(a) forgive
(b) diminish
(c) swell
(d) extract
If you do not know the meaning of 'magnify', think of a magnifying glass and what it does: it makes objects appear larger. Therefore, the correct answer is (c).
If you cannot find a correct antonym among the options, first think of antonyms you know for the given word. Then check whether any option is a synonym of that antonym. In other words, a synonym of an antonym will be the antonym of the original word. This two-step thinking often identifies the correct choice.
For example:
Industrious
(a) stupid
(b) harsh
(c) indolent
(d) complex
If you think of antonyms of industrious, words such as lazy or idle come to mind. A synonym of lazy is indolent, so (c) is the correct antonym.
Check the part of speech required by the question. A word can exist as more than one part of speech with different meanings. Match the options' part of speech to the given word before choosing the synonym or antonym.
For example:
Polish
(a) ruthlessness (b) honesty (c) indolence (d) gaucheness
Decide whether the word is used as a verb or a noun here. Since all options are nouns, the question uses the noun polish meaning culture or refinement. The antonym among the options is gaucheness, so (d) is correct.
One-word substitution means replacing a phrase or a short description with a single word that conveys the same meaning. This skill is useful to make writing concise and accurate.
For example:
Rohan can use either hand with ease.
Rohan is ambidextrous.
Read the whole phrase carefully and identify the central idea or characteristic described. Think of the exact word that captures that meaning. If the direct word does not come to mind, consider synonyms of the keywords in the phrase and then combine them logically.
If you practise these techniques and apply the strategies described, you will improve both accuracy and speed in answering synonym, antonym, and one-word substitution questions.
