Dear Kishu
I am glad that you enjoy using the internet and find it useful for learning and fun. At the same time, I want to warn you about some risks and give a few simple rules to keep you safe. First, always take permission from your parents before using the internet and tell them what you plan to do online. Second, never accept an invitation to meet someone in real life whom you only know online; they may not be who they claim to be. Third, do not fill in any forms or give personal details without first asking your parents. Never give out credit card details or banking information. Fourth, do not open emails or attachments from unknown senders as they may contain viruses. Fifth, never post photographs or personal information online that could be misused. Finally, keep your password a secret and change it if you think it has been seen by someone else. Follow these rules and you will enjoy the internet safely.
Yours sincerely
Shankar

Dear Rishi
I understand your concern about global warming and I have some practical suggestions that we can follow at home and in school. Global warming means a gradual rise in the earth's average temperature caused by harmful gases and waste. First, replace ordinary bulbs with CFLs or LED bulbs because they use less energy and give off less heat. Second, choose energy-efficient appliances and use them sensibly. Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full so that fewer cycles are needed. Third, plant as many trees as possible because trees absorb carbon dioxide and cool the air. Fourth, avoid using private vehicles every day; prefer public transport, cycling or walking to reduce smoke from vehicles. Fifth, buy fresh food from local markets to reduce packaging and transport pollution, and use paper or cloth bags instead of plastic. If everyone follows these simple steps, we can help reduce global warming.

Q.3. Write an e-mail to the editor of The Indian Express in about 100 words on the issue of the indiscriminate cutting of trees.
Hints : Role of trees-life-beauty-shade-fire-prevent soil erosion-prevent landslide-timber-herbs and fruit.

Subject: Value of trees
Dear Sir
I wish to draw attention to the indiscriminate cutting of trees in and around our city. Trees are essential for life as they provide oxygen, shade and beauty. They prevent soil erosion and landslides by holding the soil together with their roots. Trees also give us timber, fruits and herbs used for food and medicine. The loss of green cover increases heat and pollution and harms birds and animals that depend on trees for food and shelter. I urge the authorities and citizens to stop felling trees unnecessarily and to plant more trees to protect our environment.

Q.5. You purchased a colour television from M/s Diamond Electronics, Bhagirath Palace, New Delhi. Since the television is now not working properly, write an e-mail to the company asking for its replacement immediately.

M/s Diamond Electronics
Via receipt no. 161 dated January 3, 20xx, I purchased a colour television from your shop. From the first day it gave trouble and, though your mechanic visited several times and replaced parts, the set continues to malfunction. Each visit produced only a temporary repair and the defects have returned. I believe the set has a manufacturing fault that cannot be corrected by repeated repairs. I therefore request you to replace this television with a new set of the same model or to refund the amount paid. Please arrange the replacement as soon as possible.
An early action will oblige me.
Yours faithfully
Ankit

Q.6. The sanitary conditions of your locality are in a bad shape. Write an e-mail to the sanitary inspector based on the hints given below :
Hints :
No sweepers-heaps of garbage-blocked drainage-careless people-no use of dustbins-regular visit of officials-a dire need-fear of diseases

Subject: Bad conditions of the locality
Dear Sir
I wish to draw your attention to the insanitary condition in Lajpat Nagar. There are large heaps of garbage in the lanes, drains are blocked and there are no sweepers visiting regularly. Many residents do not use dustbins and throw waste on the streets. The mounds of rubbish give out a foul smell and I fear an outbreak of diseases if nothing is done soon. I request you to send your team to clean the colony immediately, clear the drains and place adequate dustbins. Please arrange regular inspections so that the problem does not recur. Prompt action will protect the health of all residents.
Yours sincerely
Roshan Lal
