Worksheet Solutions: The Verb Special Finite Verbs

I. Read the statements given below and choose the correct option:

Q.1. The transitive verbs:
(i)
I read.
(ii) The child sleeps
(iii) I read a book.
(iv) She weeps

Ans: (iii)

Explanation: A transitive verb requires a direct object. In "I read a book," the verb read has the object "a book", so it is transitive. The other sentences ("I read.", "The child sleeps", "She weeps") have no direct object and are therefore intransitive.

Q.2. The Intransitive verbs:
(i) I read a book
(ii) She sings a song
(iii) She eats.
(iv) She eats an apple

Ans: (iii)

Explanation: An intransitive verb does not take a direct object. "She eats." has no object and so is intransitive. The other sentences contain objects ("a book", "a song", "an apple") and are therefore transitive uses of the verbs.

Q.3. The Direct object:
He told me a stoiy.
(i) me
(ii) story
(iii) a
(iv) both (i) and (ii)

Ans: (ii)

Explanation: The direct object answers "what?" or "whom?" after the verb. In "He told me a story," he told what? "a story", so that is the direct object. "Me" is the indirect object (to whom the story was told).

Q.4. The indirect object:
He told me a story.
(i) he
(ii) a
(iii) story
(iv) me

Ans: (iv)

Explanation: The indirect object answers "to whom" or "for whom" the action is done. In "He told me a story," the story was told to "me", so "me" is the indirect object, while "a story" is the direct object.

II. Fill in the blanks: The same
Q.5. She sang ________ (transitive).
(i) herself
(ii) very well
(iii) a sweet song
(iv) both (i) and (iii)

Ans: (iii)

Explanation: A transitive verb needs an object. "She sang a sweet song" contains the object "a sweet song", so this is a transitive use. "Very well" is an adverbial phrase and does not make the verb transitive.

Q.6. She sang (Intransitive).
(i) very
(ii) a sweet song
(iii) well
(iv) both (ii) and (iii)

Ans: (iii)

Explanation: "She sang well" uses well as an adverb. There is no direct object, so the verb is intransitive. By contrast, "a sweet song" would be an object and make the verb transitive.

Q.7. Transitive use:
(i) The farmer works hard.
(ii) The farmer grows wheat.
(iii) He has grown fat.
(iv) I am feeling unwell

Ans: (ii)

Explanation: In "The farmer grows wheat," the verb grows has the object "wheat", so it is used transitively. The other sentences do not take direct objects: "works hard" and "has grown fat" and "am feeling unwell" are not transitive uses.

Q.8. Intransitive use:
(i) The storm has blown off the terrace.
(ii) She laughed heartily.
(iii) He laughed at me.
(iv) He gave a book.

Ans: (ii)

Explanation: "She laughed heartily" contains the verb laughed with an adverb ("heartily") and no object, so it is intransitive. In (i) the storm has an object ("the terrace"), making it transitive in use; in (iii) "laughed at me" includes a prepositional phrase, not a direct object; (iv) "He gave a book" is transitive with the object "a book".

Q.9. Singular verb:
(i)
They sing.
(ii) She sings.
(iiii) They wait.
(iv) They waited.

Ans: (ii)

Explanation: A singular subject takes a singular verb form. "She" is singular and takes "sings" (singular). "They" is plural and takes "sing" or "wait" (plural); "They waited" is past tense but still plural subject with plural agreement.

Q.10. Non-finite verb:
(i) They fly kites.
(ii) He wants to swim,
(iii) I wish I were a king.
(iv) Do your duty.

Ans: (ii)

Explanation: A non-finite verb is not marked for tense and does not show subject agreement; the infinitive "to swim" in "He wants to swim" is non-finite. The other sentences use finite verb forms ("fly", "wish/were", "do") that show tense or mood and agreement with the subject.
