Subject: Complaint regarding atrocities against women in my locality

Sir,

I write to draw your urgent attention to repeated and serious atrocities being committed against women in my locality, Krishna Kunj, Sec 15, Delhi. The pattern of violence has become frequent and alarming. Incidents include physical assault, bride burning, dowry deaths, femicide and infanticide. Because of the rare sight of police patrols and inadequate preventive measures, crimes of this nature are being faced by one in three women in my locality. Many victims are reluctant to report these offences in order to keep family matters private; as a result the offenders continue to act with impunity.

Several residents have already approached the local police informally, but no effective or sustained action has followed. The lack of prompt investigation and visible policing has increased fear among women and girls and has adversely affected their freedom of movement and daily life.

I therefore request that you kindly take immediate and appropriate action to ensure the safety of women in this area. Specifically, I request the following measures be considered and implemented at the earliest:

  • Register and investigate formal complaints received from victims and witnesses, and ensure registration of FIRs where offences are prima facie established.
  • Increase regular police patrolling in the neighbourhood, especially during evenings and nights, and deploy quick response teams for distress calls.
  • Establish or strengthen a women help desk at the police station for prompt registration of complaints and guidance to victims.
  • Launch a local awareness and sensitisation drive about legal rights and available remedies, including information about the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
  • Coordinate with municipal authorities to improve street lighting, install CCTV at vulnerable points, and ensure safe public spaces for women.
  • Ensure protection and, where necessary, medical and legal assistance for victims; consider protection orders and arrest of accused persons when warranted by evidence.
  • Hold a community meeting with residents, local leaders and police representatives to discuss safety measures and encourage reporting of offences to prevent recurrence.

I request that you kindly acknowledge receipt of this complaint and inform me of the steps that will be taken to address the situation. Prompt action will reassure residents and help prevent further harm to women and children in our area.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Kavita
