A remarkable way to understand natural resources is to understand the associated exhaustion risk, as in, if they can regenerate; at what speed? We can see that the resources that were once plentiful have already been used excessively! We cannot continue this. We behave as if natural resources were a normal product that we could restock from the supermarket shelves, but that’s not so. For a long time, debates over the environment were limited to the idea of climate change till we realized that the resources and their depletion were a major aspect that is being ignored. Natural resource degradation directly affects how people make a living. The only way forward in this situation is to make efficient use of the resources at hand.
A ray of hope is visible as the Indian government has started to shift its priorities in terms of how it manages the country’s economy and natural resources. Changes are already visible on the ground: renewable energy is gaining traction with ambitious solar and wind targets. Alternative, less water- intensive crops are being discussed and have become a priority in certain regions. Also, tangible transitions are occurring in the government.
The cleaning of rivers, etc., has also started to pick up pace. Companies are now being provided with energy-saving certificates, which are slowly becoming popular with the agriculture sector as well. We have a lot of success stories that come from state level efforts that are being put in viz-a-viz electricity and water conservation. Along with the government, we, as citizens, should now get into the same shoes as it is not anyone’s job alone and it is high time, we understand the same to preserve it for future generations to come.
