Improvement in sustainable development goal achievement- contribution of NITI Aayog to improve the ranking

The NITI Aayog has always been of the view that sustainable transformation is imperative in the long- term development of India and because our cities and urban areas play a prominent role in the same, their development and monitoring on certain parameters is crucial. Keeping these goals in perspective, the NITI Aayog along with the GIZ and the BMZ came up with a dashboard and an index that ranks 56 urban areas on various indicators. Shimla, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kochi were listed as the top performers or achievers in a report that was recently released. However, according to the index, Dhanbad, Meerut, Itanagar, Guwahati, and Patna are lagging among the lowest performances.
Some of the goals that have been used to define the performers in the index are: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean water and Sanitization, Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Peace and Justice etc. Various cities have performed well based on various factors. The urban areas are ranked on a scale of 0-100. A score of 100 implies that the urban area has achieved the targets set for 2030; a score of 0 implies that it is the farthest from achieving the targets among the selected urban areas. Overall or composite urban area scores are then generated from the Goal-wise scores to measure aggregate performance of the urban area. No city could achieve a perfect score though.
