JAM Chemistry: How to prepare for Inorganic Chemistry for JAM | How to Study for IIT JAM Chemistry PDF Download

Inorganic Chemistry for JAM is a subject that requires lots of learning or cramming. Students seldom get confused about various trends, exceptions, and properties.
Here's the best step-by-step strategy curated by EduRev experts to study inorganic chemistry for IIT JAM:

JAM Chemistry: How to prepare for Inorganic Chemistry for JAM | How to Study for IIT JAM Chemistry

Step-1: From where to start our preparation? How to keep in mind things?

  • It is recommended to start and complete the chapters: Chemical Bonding and Periodic Properties first. If the basics of these chapters are not clear, go for NCERT of Class 11 and 12th
  • Starting with Chemical Bonding and Periodic Properties will set up your base for further chapters.  In Inorganic, you need to remember many things, but in order to relate further chapters, you must cover these two chapters.
  • Periodic Properties is a chapter that consists of lots of trends and exceptions. Make their short notes and revise them again and again so that they get engraved in your mind.  Paste those short notes on a wall or at some place where the visibility is maximum.

Step-2: High weightage topics: Coordination and Organometallics

  • The two very high-weightage topics of Inorganic Chemistry are Coordination Chemistry and Organometallic Chemistry. Every year, 12- 15 marks questions are asked from Coordination and 8 marks from Organometallic Chemistry.
  • Half of your syllabus of inorganic chemistry will get covered after covering these two chapters. After covering Periodic Properties and Chemical Bonding, study them in detail. Practice Questions!
  • Books to refer to Coordination and Organometallics are: Ajai Kumar and Inorganic Chemistry by James E. Huheey

Step-3: Learn conceptual things from chapters like Main Group

  • Do not focus on cramming things. Focus on conceptual things like the concepts of Back Bonding - their conditions, bridge bonding - their conditions, Borazene, Phosphazene, concept of solvent.
  • Learn such conceptual things as these types of questions are asked and you will be able to attempt such conceptual questions only. Chances are you might forget those topics in which lot of learning part is required. There is no end to facts in inorganic!  Do not waste your time on things that require a lot of learning.

Step-3: Analyze PYQS for Small Chapters like Metallurgy, D block, and Analytical.

  •  Analyze Previous Year Questions and see yourself that these topics are ver low weightage topics. Less questions are asked from them. Do not spend much time on these chapters.
  • Go through these chapters in a glance.

Step-4: Revision from short notes to study chapters like Bioinorganic.

  • Bioinorganic is a chapter that requires a lot of revision. You need to revise it 6-7 times to get it on your tips. But after this chapter is on your tips, you can solve the questions very easily
  • Make short notes, mnemonics, tricks and revisit them again and again for the things you want to learn. Paste those on a wall or somewhere, where their visibility is maximum.

Step-5: Practice Questions

  • After studying and understanding the chapters, go for JAM subject-wise previous year questions.
  • If time permits, you can go for JEE advanced previous years too. But spend more time on practicing organic and inorganic.

Hope this information is helpful for you!
