Tips for Writing An Effective Narrative Writing

  1. Personal narrative should be written in the first person.
  2. It is important to adhere to the word-limit of 150-200 words.
  3. An eye-catching and interesting title is necessary to capture/attract the readers’ attention. The title should be short and should cover the subject adequately.
  4. Jotting down your ideas before writing and preparing an outline help in writing a good narrative.
  5. Don’t minimise the details. Readers having no prior knowledge about the given details may misunderstand the narrative if some critical detail is left out.
  6. Use illustrative words and graphic descriptions to involve the reader, not just informing as in a report. Phrases like “I was disappointed that ….” or “My world came crashing down on me when …. ” will create vivid images in the reader’s mind.
  7. Any unnecessary information, which distracts from the focus and main thread of the story should be removed from the narrative.
  8. Normally narratives are real-life happenings, but some fictional information may be added to make them interesting. Even in a true story, you can build up the plot gradually.
