Important Questions: The Determiner

Q.1. What is a determiner?

Ans: A determiner is a word placed before a noun or noun phrase that shows which person or thing is meant, how many there are, or who owns it. Determiners help us know whether we mean something specific or something general, for example, a book versus the book.

Q.2. What is the function of a determiner in a sentence?

Ans: The function of a determiner is to identify or limit the noun or noun phrase that follows it. It can show whether the noun is definite or indefinite, indicate number or quantity, or show possession. For example, this book (specific), some water (quantity), and my bag (possession).

Q.3. What types of determiners are there?

Ans: There are four main types of determiners: articles (such as a, an, the), demonstratives (such as this, these, that, those), possessives (such as my, your, their) and quantifiers (such as some, many, all). Each type gives different information about the noun.

Q.4. What are the articles?

Ans: The articles are "a", "an" and "the". Use a or an for non-specific singular nouns (for example, a cat, an apple) and the for a specific noun known to the speaker and listener (for example, the moon).

Q.5. How do we use "a" and "an"?

Ans: Use a before a singular noun that begins with a consonant sound and an before a singular noun that begins with a vowel sound. For example, say a boy, a university (because it begins with a /j/ sound), an egg and an hour (because the h is not pronounced).

Q.6. How do we use "the"?

Ans: Use the when you refer to a specific person or thing that is known to both the speaker and listener, when the noun has already been mentioned, or when the noun is unique. For example, the book I lent you, the President, and the sun.

Q.7. What are demonstratives?

Ans: Demonstratives are determiners that show the position of the noun relative to the speaker. This and these refer to things that are near, while that and those refer to things that are farther away. For example, this pen (near), those trees (far).

Q.8. What are possessives?

Ans: Possessives are determiners that show ownership or association. Common possessive determiners include my, your, his, her, its, our and their, as in my bag or their school.

Q.9. What are quantifiers?

Ans: Quantifiers are determiners that tell us about the number or amount of a noun. Examples include some, any, many, few, several, all, both, neither and either. For example, many students, some water, and both options.

Q.10. Can a noun be used without a determiner?

Ans: Yes. Nouns can be used without determiners in several situations, for example when speaking about things in general - as in Cats are cute - with plural or uncountable nouns, or with proper nouns like names of people and places: Sachin is a cricketer, India is large. Whether a determiner is needed depends on the meaning and context.
