About the Book

"The Life Changer" is Khadija Abubakar Jalli's debut novel, which transforms the narrative of life on campus. Infused with underlying optimism, the book embraces hope and redemption in the lives of young people. Through this publication, Jalli showcases the resurgence of the female voice in African literature. The story revolves around Salma and her roommates, as they navigate the challenging and complex waters of academia during their time at the university.

Summary

The story continues with the protagonist, Salma, facing a difficult situation during her final exams. Salma had always believed that Moral Philosophy, the subject she was about to write the exam for, would be easy because it encompassed the moral values her parents and religious leaders had taught her since childhood. She had never attended classes and relied on past questions that the lecturer had recycled over the years with minor changes.

On the day of the exam, Salma realized that none of the topics she had prepared for were included. While her classmates confidently started writing, she was left unable to answer any questions. She tried to communicate with her classmate, Kola, through a silent method they had developed, hoping he would help her. Kola reluctantly passed her some coded responses, but their teacher returned unexpectedly, catching Salma in the act of cheating.

Salma was asked to fill out an Examinations Malpractice Form, and Kola signed as a witness. They were assured that the matter would be resolved by the Head of Department (HOD) and that Salma could continue writing her exam. Salma prayed for forgiveness and hoped the HOD would show compassion.

They went to the HOD's office, and Salma was anxious about the outcome. The HOD had a reputation for being kind and understanding. The secretary informed them that they could enter, and the invigilator accompanied them inside. The HOD coldly told the invigilator to prepare the necessary documents for the Exams and Ethics Committee, indicating that the case was beyond his jurisdiction.

Salma was expelled from the university for cheating, and she implicated Kola as well. The story ends with the realization that breaking the rules has consequences and that Salma's actions led to her downfall.

Conclusion

The story highlights the consequences of cheating during exams and the importance of adhering to rules and regulations. Salma's belief that she could get away with cheating, like many other students, ultimately resulted in her expulsion from the university. The story serves as a reminder to students that honesty and integrity are crucial in academic settings and that breaking the rules can have severe repercussions.
