In this chapter, five children discover a special creature called the Psammead. It's a furry brown creature with long whiskers, and it can do amazing things! The Psammead can grant wishes, which means it can make things happen just by saying them.
When they first find the Psammead, they are surprised and a little scared. But the creature is not dangerous at all. It's just a bit grumpy because it's been alone for a very, very long time. The Psammead tells the children that it's been around for thousands of years!
The children make a wish to become very, very beautiful, and the Psammead makes it come true. But when they see each other, they look so different that they hardly recognize one another!
Later, they go back home to their house, but the person who answers the door doesn't recognize them because of their new looks. They try to explain, but she doesn't believe them and sends them away.
The children have to wait until sunset for their looks to go back to normal. When they return home, they're really hungry and thirsty. They tell their caretaker about the strange children they met, but she thinks they're making it up.
