Introduction

  • Nature is beautiful and essential for life on Earth.
  • Sometimes, nature gets imbalanced, leading to Natural Disasters.
  • Natural Disasters cause widespread destruction, deaths, and loss of property.

Types of Natural Disasters


Earthquake

  • Sudden vibration or movement of the earth's surface.
  • Caused by disturbances at the tectonic plates' joints.
  • Places in seismic zones are prone to earthquakes.
  • Measured on the Richter scale (Minor to Extremely Severe).

Precautions During an Earthquake:

  • Take shelter under a strong table or bed.
  • Move out from buildings to open areas.
  • Do not use lifts; use staircases.

Tsunami

  • Occurs when an earthquake displaces large volumes of sea water.
  • Causes huge waves, especially in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Tsunamis travel long distances, hitting coastal areas severely.

Floods

  • Caused by excessive rain or landslides blocking rivers.
  • Water spreads, submerging surrounding areas.
  • Channels should be dug to drain away water.

Precautions During a Flood:

  • Go to a safe and high ground.
  • Switch off electrical appliances.
  • Place sandbags around the house.
  • Listen to government warnings.

Cyclones

  • Violent storms with heavy rain and strong winds.
  • Cause floods and tidal waves in coastal regions.
  • Known as typhoons, cyclones, or hurricanes in different regions.

Precautions During a Cyclone:

  • Be alert and listen to weather forecasts.
  • Stay away from the sea and move to a safer place.
  • Keep an emergency kit and food ready.

Drought

  • Period of dryness due to little or no rainfall.
  • Causes water and food scarcity.
  • Regions facing severe drought include Rajasthan, Gujarat, etc.

Preventing Drought:

  • Avoid deforestation, encourage afforestation.
  • Grow more trees.
  • Practice rainwater harvesting and water conservation.
  • Grow drought-resistant plants and crops.

Other Natural Disasters

  • Landslides: Occur due to heavy rainfall or earthquakes, leading to rocks sliding down slopes.
  • Volcanic Eruptions: Hot lava from volcanoes destroys buildings and lives.
  • Forest Fires: Uncontrolled fires in wild forests, causing loss of lives and property.
  • Avalanches: Rapid fall of snow, ice, and rocks down mountainsides.
