The story is about a brave mongoose named Rikki-tikki-tavi, who lives with a family in their bungalow. Rikki-tikki has taken on the responsibility of protecting the family from dangerous snakes, especially Nag and Nagaina.
One night, while on his nightly patrol, Rikki-tikki encounters Chuchundra, a muskrat who is always scared and sad. Chuchundra is afraid of being attacked by snakes and is hesitant to move away from the safety of the walls.
Rikki-tikki is determined to keep the family safe and listens attentively for any sounds of snakes moving at night. He learns that Nag and Nagaina, two deadly cobras, are plotting to harm the family. Despite the danger, Rikki-tikki is confident that Nag won't mistake him for someone else.
Later, Rikki-tikki overhears Nag and Nagaina discussing their plan to kill the people in the bungalow. They believe that if they succeed, the bungalow will be empty, and they can rule the garden.
To stop the snakes, Rikki-tikki decides to confront Nag. He finds Nag in the bathroom sluice and carefully plans his attack. After a daring and intense struggle, Rikki-tikki manages to defeat Nag, proving his bravery and determination.
However, the victory comes with a cost. Rikki-tikki is battered and shaken but survives. The big man of the house, alerted by the noise, shoots Nag with a shotgun, ending the threat.
In the end, Rikki-tikki's courage saves the family from the snake menace, and he becomes their hero.
