High Court Services

The personnel at the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad are broadly categorized into four cadres, namely the General Office Cadre, BS Cadre, PS Cadre, and Computer Cadre.

Subordinate Judiciary

In Uttar Pradesh, the Subordinate Judiciary is bifurcated into two segments: UP Civil Judicial Services and UP Higher Judicial Services. The former encompasses Munsifs and Civil Judges, while the latter includes Civil and Sessions Judges. Additionally, there are subordinate courts in Uttar Pradesh dealing with cases at various levels, outlined below:
District Courts

  • Presided over by a judge, District Courts in Uttar Pradesh, numbering 75 in correspondence with the state's districts, operate under the administrative and judicial oversight of the High Court. Each district has a District Court led by a District Judge, with the highest authority being the District and Session Judge. The appointments of both judges are made by the Governor in consultation with the Chief Justice of the High Court.

Family Court

  • Established by the Family Court Act of 1984, each commissionary in the state has provision for a Family Court, with Lucknow and Kanpur having two each. These courts specialize in cases related to marriage, maintenance, spouse and children issues, among others.

Lok Adalat

  • Following the passage of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, and Tehsil Legal Services Authority were established. These authorities, operating under the jurisdiction of Lok Adalat, decide cases and offer free legal aid to marginalized sections. Presently, every district in Uttar Pradesh hosts a Lok Adalat Court, which hears matters ranging from civil and criminal cases to marriage and divorce, maintenance, chakbandi, damage cases, and Family Court cases.

Special Courts

  • Special courts have been set up at the district level in Uttar Pradesh to handle cases related to specific acts. These courts, with limited jurisdiction, are established under acts like the ST/SC Act, 1989, and Anti-corruption Act. They are located in Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, and Gorakhpur.

Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta

  • The Lokayukta is an anti-corruption organization in Uttar Pradesh, established under the Lokayukta Act of 1975. Vishambar Dayal was elected as the first Lokayukta on September 14, 1977, serving an 8-year term.

Uttar Pradesh Public Services Tribunal

  • The Uttar Pradesh Public Services (Tribunal) Act, 1976, was enacted to establish tribunals for resolving judicial disputes related to the service and employment of public servants in the state. Five tribunals, established under this act, are currently operational, although their establishment and functioning were contested through a writ petition in the High Court.
