The Select Missing Word question type is considered one of the simpler formats in the PTE exam. As you listen to an audio clip, the final word or phrase is replaced by a beep, and your task is to choose the missing word or words from the provided options.
Achieving a high score in this question type requires not only understanding the spoken words but also grasping the overall context of the audio. Your proficiency in vocabulary, collocation, and grammar may also be assessed in this question type.
A 7-second preparation time is allotted before the listening begins. During this time, identify the question topic, quickly scan the response options, and draw on your background knowledge to focus your listening and make an informed prediction.
Carefully listen to the recording, paying close attention to the spoken words, repetitions, and key content. The better you comprehend the audio, the easier it becomes to determine the most fitting option in context.
Monitor the progress bar, giving special attention to the concluding part of the recording, as it directly pertains to the answer.
Once you gather the necessary information, the next step is to choose the option that best aligns with it.
After selecting an option, evaluate its grammatical correctness, logical coherence, and whether it completes the incomplete sentence. If the chosen option meets all criteria, it is likely the correct answer.
(i) Each item in the PTE Select Missing Word task presents three to five response options, with only ONE being correct. Click on your chosen option at the end of the recording.
(ii) The subsequent recording will not begin until you click 'Next,' providing a brief window for reconsideration. If you wish to change your answer, click on it again to 'de-select' and then choose the correct option.
