Bardhaman Division 


Birbhum District 

  • Location and Boundaries 
    Geographically situated at the North-Eastern extremity of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, this region shares boundaries with Murshidabad and East Bardhaman to the East, and West Bardhaman to the South. The district of 'Beerbhoom' was initially established in 1787, and it was considerably larger than its present size.
    Formation 
    In 1787 the district ‘Beerbhoom’ was established, which is much bigger than it is now.
    Tourist Places 
    Renowned as 'the land of the red soil,' Birbhum is famed for the Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore. Notable tourist destinations include Tarapith, Shaktipitha Kankalitala, Jaidev-Kenduli, Bakreswar temple, and others. The district spans an area of 4,545 sq km, with a population of 3,502,404 and a literacy rate of 70.68%.

    In 1795 the district of Hooghly was formed.

    An extension of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, West Bardhaman gradually slopes down to the fertile plains of East Bardhaman. Bordered by Dumka district of Jharkhand and Birbhum district to the North, East Bardhaman to the East, Purulia and Bankura districts to the South (across the Damodar River), and Dhanbad district of Jharkhand to the West, the district was formed on April 7, 2017.
    Formation 
    It was formed on 7th April, 2017 bifurcating erstwhile Bardhaman district.

Bordered by West Bardhaman and Bankura to the West, Hooghly to the South, Nadia to the East, and Murshidabad and Birbhum to the North, the district boasts tourist places such as Kankaleshwari Kalibari, Sarbamangla temple, Damodar riverside, Curzon Gate, and Kalyaneshwari temple.

    It was formed on 7th April, 2017.

Alipurduar District

  • Location and Boundaries 
    Alipurduar, a landlocked district, is bordered by Jalpaiguri to the West, Assam to the East, and Cooch Behar to the South. To the North, it shares an international border with Bhutan.
    Formation 
    It has been carved out from Jalpaiguri on 25th June, 2014 as the 20th district in the state.

    Notable attractions include Jaldapara National Park, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Chilapata Forest, Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary, Sikiajhora, Rasikbil, Pukuri, and more.

    Situated in the northeastern part of the state, Cooch Behar is bordered by Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar to the North, Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam to the East, and Bangladesh to the West and South. Nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, it is located at 26°22′N and 89°29′E.
    Formation 
    Cooch Behar was transferred and merged with the province of West Bengal on 19th January, 1950.

    Prominent attractions include Cooch Behar Raj Bari, Madan Mohan Temple, Baneswar Shiva Temple, Sagardighi, Siddheswari Kali Bari, Kamteswari Temple, Siddhanath Shiva Temple, and more.

    The northernmost district of West Bengal, Darjeeling is divided into hills and plains. The hilly region falls under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. It is bordered by Sikkim to the North, Kisanganj district of Bihar to the South, Kalimpong district to the East, and Nepal to the West.
    Formation 
    It was formed in 1866 and was considered as a regulated area.

    Darjeeling offers attractions such as Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and Darjeeling Zoo, Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, Darjeeling Ropeway, Darjeeling Mall, Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park, Singalia National Park, Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda, Bengal Natural History Museum, Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, etc. It is renowned for its aromatic tea.

    Positioned between 26°16′ and 27°0′ North latitude and 88°4′ and 89°53′ East longitude, Jalpaiguri has international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh to the North and South, respectively. It shares district borders with Darjeeling hills to the West and North-West, and Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts to the East.
    Formation 
    The district is formed by the British rulers in 1869.

    Main attractions include Dooars, Gorumara Forest, Jayanti Forest, Jalpaiguri Rajbari, Buxa Fort, Sikia Jhora, Jogomaya Kalibari, The Baptist Church, Jubilee Park, Teesta Udyan, Bhramari Devi Temple, etc.

    Formation 
    It was formed on 14th February, 2017, after splitting from the Darjeeling district.

    Key places of interest include Dr. Graham’s Homes, Lord Buddha Statue, Sherpa View Point, Durga Mandir, Hanuman Temple, Deola Hill, Mangal Dham, Thongsa Gompa, etc.
