Q1: For Sand Of Uniform Spherical Particles, The Void Ratios In The Loosest And The Densest States Are _____ And _____ Respectively. [GATE 1991: 2 Marks]
Ans: 0.91, 0.35
Sol:
In the loosest state, particles are in a simple cubic (cubical) packing (coordination number = 6). Consider a cube of side equal to one particle diameter d; this cube contains one sphere.
Volume of one spherical particle = (π/6) d3
Volume of the cube that contains this particle = d3
Therefore, solids volume fraction (porosity complement), φ = Vs / V = (π/6) d3 / d3 = π/6 ≈ 0.5236
Void ratio, e = (1 - φ) / φ = (1 / φ) - 1
Thus, emax = (1 / 0.5236) - 1 ≈ 0.9107 ≈ 0.91

Thus void ratio in loosest state,

In the densest state, particles are in close packing (face-centred cubic or hexagonal close packing; coordination number = 12). For close packing, the maximum solids volume fraction is
φmax = π / (3√2) ≈ 0.74048
Therefore, emin = (1 - φmax) / φmax
emin = (1 - 0.74048) / 0.74048 = 0.25952 / 0.74048 ≈ 0.35
Hence, for uniform spherical particles: emax = 0.91 and emin = 0.35.
