Meaning

Embedded figures are figures hidden inside another figure.

• A figure (X) is said to be embedded inside figure (Y) if figure (Y) contains a part of figure (X).
• In an embedded-figure question, we are required to select from the alternatives the figure that clearly shows the embedded portion of the original figure.
• These questions test the ability to perceive and recognise a smaller or simpler shape inside a larger, more complex shape.

Example:

Embedded-figure problems ask the student to look carefully at a large picture and find a complete or partial copy of a smaller figure inside it. The smaller figure may be turned, reflected, or partly hidden by lines and patterns of the larger figure.

Types of Embedded Figures

Single Embedded Figures: Involves identifying a single figure hidden within a larger figure.
Example: Identify a triangle hidden within a larger square.

Multiple Embedded Figures: Involves identifying multiple smaller figures hidden within a larger figure, often with overlapping elements.
Example: Identify several triangles hidden within a larger circle.

Strategies for Solving Embedded Figures Problems

• Look at the whole figure first: Note the outer boundary and the main dividing lines so you understand the overall structure.
• Scan for familiar shapes: Search for straight-line patterns for triangles and rectangles, curved parts for circles and ovals, and repeated motifs that may form a shape.
• Mental outlining: Trace the outline of the small figure in your mind or with a finger on the paper to see if all sides and corners match exactly.
• Consider rotation and reflection: The embedded figure may be rotated (turned) or reflected (mirrored). Try turning the paper mentally to match the orientation.
• Ignore irrelevant details: Some lines or decorations are not part of the embedded figure; focus on the continuous lines that form the smaller shape.
• Eliminate options logically: Compare each option to the larger figure and rule out any option that requires lines or angles that do not exist in the big figure.
• Check corners and intersections: Ensure every corner and intersection of the smaller figure matches a corner or intersection in the larger figure.

Steps to Solve Embedded Figures Questions

• Do not get tense when you first see a complex figure; stay calm and work systematically.
• Carefully study the form of the given large figure before comparing options.
• Mentally outline each option over the large figure to see whether it fits exactly, allowing for rotation or reflection where necessary.
• Watch for partially hidden lines: sometimes part of the small figure may be shared with other lines of the large figure.
• Think wisely before selecting the answer; double-check corners, sides and angles.

• Find a triangle embedded in the following drawn figure. Mark the three vertices that match the triangle option.
• From four choices, pick which one is a rotated version of a small figure embedded in a larger picture.
• Identify two different embedded squares inside a complex grid drawing.
• Draw your own large figure that contains an embedded circle and an embedded triangle; swap with a partner and ask them to find your embedded figures.
