The National Flag

The national flag of India, also known as the Tiranga (meaning tricolor), is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle, and dark green at the bottom in equal proportions. In the center of the white stripe is a navy blue wheel with 24 spokes, known as the Ashoka Chakra.

  1. Origin and Evolution: 
    • Originally, the Indian National Congress used a tricolour flag with a spinning wheel.
    • After Independence, it was decided that the Ashok Chakra would replace the spinning wheel.
  2. Symbolism: 
    • The saffron color represents sacrifice, white symbolizes peace, and green stands for prosperity. 
    • The Ashok Chakra in the center represents righteousness.
  3. Respect Guidelines: Certain rules must be followed when hoisting the flag, like ensuring the saffron strip is always on top and preventing it from touching the ground. 


The National Emblem

The national emblem of India is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. It shows four lions standing back to back on a platform, with an image of a wheel in the middle. Below it, there's a saying in a language called Devanagari that means "Truth Alone Triumphs." This emblem was originally created long ago by a famous Indian emperor named Ashoka.

  1. Source and Meaning: 
    • The national emblem is inspired by the Ashokan Pillar at Sarnath, featuring three lions standing back to back. 
    • It also includes carved animals and a lotus, symbolizing various aspects of India's heritage and values.
  2. Message of Truth: The inscription "Satyameva Jayate" beneath the emblem means 'Truth alone Triumphs', emphasizing the importance of honesty and integrity.

The National Anthem

The national anthem of India is "Jana Gana Mana", which was written by Rabindranath Tagore. It was officially adopted as the national anthem of India .It was originally composed in Bengali and is written in a highly Sanskritized form of Bengali.
