Road Transport network in Telangana

• Telangana became the 29th state of India on June 2, 2014, after being part of Andhra Pradesh. It consists of an area carved out of ten north-western districts of the former state of Andhra Pradesh: Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Khammam, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Nalgonda, and Mahbubnagar.
• Telangana shares its borders with Maharashtra to the North and North-West, Karnataka to the West, Chhattisgarh to the North-East, and Odisha to the East.

Airways Transport Network in Telangana

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

• The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is an international airport catering to Hyderabad, the largest city in Telangana, India. Situated approximately 24 kilometers south of Hyderabad, it is positioned in Shamshabad.
• Operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, a public–private partnership, the airport commenced operations in March 2008, replacing Begumpet Airport as Hyderabad's primary commercial airport.
• Named in honor of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, the airport features one passenger terminal, a cargo terminal, and two runways. Additionally, it houses aviation training facilities, a fuel farm, a solar power plant, and two MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facilities.
• As of April 2017, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport ranks as the sixth busiest airport in India based on passenger traffic. Over the period spanning April 2016 to March 2017, it served approximately 15.1 million passengers.
• Functioning as a hub for Air India Regional, Blue Dart Aviation, SpiceJet, Lufthansa Cargo, and TruJet, the airport also serves as a focus city for IndiGo.

Begumpet Airport

• Begumpet Airport, also referred to as Hyderabad Old Airport, serves as a civil enclave located in Begumpet. The airport is home to the Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy (RGAA) and the Begumpet Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force.
• It houses the Navigation Training School of the Training Command, Indian Air Force, previously known as the Navigation and Signals School (N&SS).
• Begumpet Airport previously served as the international and domestic airport for Hyderabad until the inauguration of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on March 23, 2008. Following this, all commercial civil operations ceased at Begumpet.
• The last commercial flight departing from Begumpet was Thai Airways International flight TG 330 to Bangkok on March 22, 2008.
• Presently, Begumpet Airport is utilized for military aviation training and for flights transporting VIPs. There is a proposal from the Civil Aviation Ministry to establish an Air Traffic Control (ATC) training center at Begumpet Airport.

Warangal Airport

• Warangal Airport, situated in the state of Telangana, India, was operational until 1981.
• Constructed in 1930 at Mamnoor in Warangal district, Warangal Airport was the largest airport during the pre-independence era. It was established by the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, along with another airport at Sholapur. These airports aimed to facilitate local businesses, particularly the paper industry in Sirpur Kaghaznagar, and support industries like the Azam Zahi mills in Warangal.
• Until its closure in 1981, Warangal Airport witnessed the arrival of numerous Prime Ministers and Presidents. During the Indo-China war, it served as a hangar for government aircraft, as the Delhi airport was considered a potential target during combat.
• Additionally, Warangal Airport functioned as a hub for various cargo services and Vayudoot services.

Ramagundam Airport

• Ramagundam Airport serves the city of Ramagundam in Telangana, India, and is situated near the Basanth Nagar Kesoram cement factory.
• Historically, the airport was utilized during the operation of Vayudoot, a subsidiary of Air India and Indian Airlines, by the Government of India. However, following the cessation of Vayudoot operations, its usage has become sporadic.
• Presently, the airport sees occasional use, primarily for the landing of VIP flights or in cases of emergency landings.
• The State Government of Telangana has proposed the development of Ramagundam Airport as part of its plan to establish a third airport in the state.
