Mammalian Nervous System

Structure & Role of the Mammalian Nervous System

  • The human nervous system is divided into two main parts:
    • The central nervous system (CNS): This includes the brain and spinal cord, serving as the command center for the body's functions.
    • The peripheral nervous system (PNS): Comprising all the nerves outside the CNS, it connects the CNS to the rest of the body, enabling communication and control.
  • Importance of the Nervous System:
    • Understanding our environment and responding to it
    • Regulating body functions
  • Nerve impulses, which are electrical signals, transmit information through the nervous system via specialized cells called neurons.
  • Multiple neurons bundled together form a nerve.

FAQs on Mammalian Nervous System

1. What is the structure of the mammalian nervous system?
Ans. The mammalian nervous system consists of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves and ganglia).
2. What are the roles of the central nervous system in the human body?
Ans. The central nervous system controls and coordinates all bodily functions, processes sensory information, and helps in the regulation of emotions and behavior.
3. How does the peripheral nervous system function in the mammalian nervous system?
Ans. The peripheral nervous system helps in transmitting information between the central nervous system and the rest of the body, including sensory input and motor output.
4. Why is the mammalian nervous system important for survival?
Ans. The mammalian nervous system is crucial for survival as it allows for quick responses to stimuli, coordination of bodily functions, and the ability to adapt to changing environments.
5. How does the human nervous system impact everyday activities and decision-making?
Ans. The human nervous system plays a key role in everyday activities by controlling movements, processing sensory information, and influencing cognitive functions such as memory and decision-making.
