Andhra Pradesh: A State Overview

  • Andhra Pradesh, one of the 29 states of India, is located on the southeastern coast of the country. It ranks as the eighth largest state in terms of area, covering 160,205 square kilometers (61,855 square miles). According to the 2011 census, it is the tenth most populous state, with a population of 49,386,799 people. 
  • The new capital city of Andhra Pradesh is planned to be situated in Guntur District, to the north of Guntur City, and will be developed under the Capital Region Development Authority. As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, Hyderabad will serve as the de jure capital of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states for a period not exceeding 10 years.

Important cities include Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa, Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Ongole, and Eluru. Vishakapatnam stands as the largest city and commercial center of the state, boasting a GDP of $26 billion, followed by Vijayawada with a GDP of $36 billion.
