Centre of Gravity

Centre of Gravity

  • The concept of the centre of gravity refers to the point where an object's weight can be assumed to act.
  • For instance, when a person stands upright, their center of gravity typically lies around the middle of the body, slightly behind the navel. In the case of a sphere, the center of gravity coincides with its geometrical center.
  • Symmetrical objects with consistent density exhibit their center of gravity at the point of symmetry, where the object's shape is equally balanced.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
Try yourself: Where does the center of gravity typically lie when a person stands upright?
A

At the top of the head

B

Around the middle of the body, slightly behind the navel

C

At the feet

D

In the hands

Stability

  • The stability of an object is influenced by the position of its center of gravity.
  • An object is considered stable when its center of gravity is situated directly above its base.

Stability

  • A broader base corresponds to a lower center of gravity for an object, enhancing its stability.
  • Conversely, a narrower base results in a higher center of gravity, increasing the likelihood of the object toppling over when subjected to a push.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
Try yourself: How does the position of an object's center of gravity affect its stability?
A

It has no impact on the stability of the object.

B

A higher center of gravity increases the object's stability.

C

A lower center of gravity decreases the object's stability.

D

The position of the center of gravity has no relationship with the object's stability.

EduRev Tip: The center of gravity, though a theoretical point, can reside either inside or outside a body. It shifts based on the body's shape. Consider how a person's center of gravity changes when leaning forward versus standing upright.
