Nouns ending with -s, -x, -z in the singular do not change in the plural.

  • le/un nez - les/des nez

Nouns ending with -eau and -eu normally take an -x in the plural.

  • A few nouns ending with -ou take -s in the plural.
    • le/un cou - les/des cous
      (luh/un koo) (lay/day koo)
      the/a neck - the/some necks

Most of the nouns ending with -al take -aux in the plural.

  • le/un journal - les/des journaux
    (luh/un zhoor-nal) (lay/day zhoor-no)
    the/a newspaper - the/some newspapers

Exception:

  • le/un bal - les/des bals
    (luh/un bal) (lay/day bal)
    the/a ball (dance) - the/some balls (dances)
  • le/un carnaval - les/des carnavals
    (luh/un kar-na-val) (lay/day kar-na-val)
    the/a carnival - the/some carnivals

Verbs

Second Group of Verbs - "-ir" Verbs

  • Most verbs whose infinitive ends with "ir" belong to this group.

  • The present tense of "ir" verbs is conjugated by removing the "r" ending and adding "-s", "-s", "-t", "-ssons", "-ssez", "-ssent" to the radical of the verb.

  • Example: verb – finir (to finish); radical – fini
