Example 2: Train timetables

Josh plans to travel from Newcastle to Edinburgh.
He prefers to depart from Newcastle in the afternoon.
The timetable provided lists the departure times of direct trains from Newcastle to Edinburgh.
The earliest available train leaves Newcastle at 12:39 PM (24-hour clock).
If it arrives on schedule, it will reach Edinburgh at 14:13 (24-hour clock).
To calculate the journey time for this train, he sketches the following:

The train departs at 12:39 PM, which is 21 minutes before 1 PM. The time between 1 PM and 2:13 PM is 1 hour and 13 minutes.
Therefore, the total journey time is 21 minutes (departure time) + 1 hour and 13 minutes (travel time) = 1 hour and 34 minutes.

Example 2: Bus timetables

The bus timetable below displays various bus departure times for Thornton village and surrounding areas.
This route is circular, starting and ending at the local bus station or interchange.
The timetable lists buses departing between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM.
There are five sets of bus times shown.
Departure times are as follows: 6:00 AM, 6:15 AM, 6:30 AM, 6:45 AM, and 7:00 AM.
Buses departing at 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM make two fewer stops than others.
The planned journey time for three buses is 65 minutes.
For the two buses with fewer stops, the journey time is 58 minutes.
