Buddhism and Monasteries in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur

Buddhist Sculpture in Himachal Pradesh | HPPSC HPAS Preparation - HPPSC HPAS (Himachal Pardesh)

  • In the districts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, the influence of Buddhism is deeply ingrained. Most of the Buddhist sculptures in these areas are housed within monasteries, reflecting the region's spiritual heritage.
  • The architecture of these monasteries differs significantly from the typical hill architecture found in other parts of Himachal Pradesh. The structures here feature flat roofs, inward-sloping walls, and are made from sun-dried bricks or simple stones, as opposed to timber-bonded stones seen elsewhere.
  • There are three primary types of monasteries in these regions:
    • Tak-Phu: Monasteries situated in caves.
    • Gompa: Representing a solitary place, often isolated.
    • La-Khang (also called Da-Khang or Tsugla-Khang): Temples located near villages, often serving as academies or meeting halls.
  • The monasteries in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur feature distinct differences from those in Rewalsar. While the former tend to have flat roofs, the latter follow the pagoda style with tiered roofs. However, both types have richly decorated interiors, with frescoes depicting scenes from Lamaistic lore in the traditional Tibetan style.
  • Thankas, traditional painted scrolls, often hang from the walls, and the chapel is typically located at the center. It is said that Padma Sambhava, along with two scholars from Nalanda, introduced the Vajrayana order of Buddhism to Tibet. His footprints can still be seen on a rock at the Nako Monastery.
  • The main images found in these monasteries include Buddha, Padma Sambhava, Avalokiteshwara, Vajrapani, and Manjushri, the latter three serving as family protectors.
