Introduction

Himachal Pradesh's hydropower sector is crucial for the state's economic growth. It plays a significant role in generating revenue, creating job opportunities, and improving living standards. With substantial hydro potential, the state has been proactive in harnessing its resources while balancing environmental and social concerns.

Hydro Potential and Allocation

• Total Hydro Potential: Himachal Pradesh has an estimated hydro potential of 27,436 MW.
• Harnessable Potential: Out of this, 24,000 MW is assessed as feasible for development.
• Current Allocation: Approximately 20,912 MW of the harnessable potential has been allocated across various sectors.
• Harnessed Capacity: To date, about 10,519 MW of hydro power has been successfully harnessed.

Major Hydro Power Projects

• Nathpa Jhakri Project: A significant project with a capacity of 1,500 MW, managed by SJVN.
• Karcham Wangtu Project: Another major project with a 1,000 MW capacity.
• Dehar Power House: Features a capacity of 996 MW.

These major projects are predominantly located in the districts of Kinnaur, Chamba, and Kullu.

Newly Allotted Projects

Chamba District:

• Sai Kothi-I: 15 MW
• Devi Kothi: 16 MW
• Sai Kothi-II: 16.50 MW
• Hail HEP: 18 MW

Kullu District:

• Raison: 18 MW

Kinnaur District:

• Batseri: 60 MW

Shimla District:

• New Nogli: 9 MW

Additionally, Himurja has allotted two small hydroelectric projects:

• Kuthar HEP: 4.5 MW
• Tikkar HEP: 3.5 MW

• Gyspa HEP: 300 MW in Kinnaur (National Importance).
• Surgani Sundla HEP: 48 MW in Chamba.
• Nakthan HEP: 460 MW in Kullu.
• Thana Plaun HEP: 191 MW in Mandi.
• Triveni Mahadev HEP: 78 MW in Mandi (near Sandhol).
• Renuka Dam HEP: 40 MW in Sirmaur (National Importance).
• Deothal Chanju HEP: 30 MW in Chamba.
• Chanju – III HEP: 48 MW in Chamba.
• Dhamwari Sundla HEP: 70 MW in Shimla.
• Sunni Dam HEP: 528 MW in Kaira village (Shimla and Mandi districts).

Projects Under Pre-Feasibility Stage:

• Chiroti Saichu HEP: 26 MW in Chamba.
• Saichu Sach Khas HEP: 117 MW in Chamba.
• Lujai HEP: 45 MW in Chamba.
• Saichu HEP: 58 MW in Chamba.
• Khab HEP: 636 MW in Kinnaur.

Others:

• Bara Kamba HEP: 45 MW in Kinnaur.
• Brua HEP: 9 MW in Kinnaur.

Recent Updates

Commissioned Projects:

• Jeori: 9.60 MW in Shimla.
• Raura: 12 MW in Kinnaur.
• Rala: 13 MW in Kinnaur.

Upcoming Projects:

• Salum: 9 MW.
• Kuwarsi-II: 15 MW. These are expected to be commissioned by March 2020.

Solar Power Initiatives

HPPCL is also focusing on solar power projects:

• Berra Dol: 5 MW near Naina Devi Ji Shrine in Bilaspur.
• Aghlor: 10 MW in Una.
