Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil (born 22 October 1935) is the current Governor-designate of Bihar, a state in eastern India. He is an educator and a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress from Maharashtra.

Early Life and Social Works

Patil was born in Ambap village, located in the present-day Kolhapur district. He has established numerous educational institutions, including:

  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed University) in Pune
  • Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Navi Mumbai (Deemed to be University)
  • Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College Navi Mumbai
  • DY Patil Education Society Kolhapur (Deemed University)
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Sports Academy
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Knowledge City in Pune
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil International School Nerul
  • D. Y. Patil College of Engineering and Technology
  • D. Y. Patil Medical College at Kolhapur
  • D. Y. Patil College of Engineering at Pune (established in 1984)

For his contributions to social work, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991.

Political Career

  • Patil's political journey began when he was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council as a Congress candidate in 1957, serving until 1962. He was a member of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha from 1967 to 1978, representing the Panhala Vidhan Sabha constituency in both the 1967 and 1972 elections. 
  • He was appointed as the Governor of Tripura on November 21, 2009, and took the oath of office on November 27, 2009. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar on March 9, 2013.
