  • First Census: The first Population Census of India was conducted in 1872 during Lord Mayo's tenure. However, the first standard Population Census of India, managed under Lord Rippon, was carried out in 1881. The first Census of Independent India was conducted in 1951. The 2011 Census was the 15th since 1872 and the 7th since Independence.
