History of Districts in Chhattisgarh

  • After the independence of India, the princely states were integrated with the Central Provinces and Berar to establish the new state of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Present-day Chhattisgarh initially comprised seven districts of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The former states of Kanker and Bastar were amalgamated to form the new Bastar District. Parts of Surguja, Korea, and Chang Bhakar came together to form the new Surguja District. Additionally, the states of Nandgaon, Khairagarh, and Kawardha constituted the new Rajnandgaon District.
  • In 1998, the seven districts that make up present-day Chhattisgarh underwent reorganization, resulting in the formation of 16 districts.
  • Several districts were split off from existing ones in this reorganization: Dantewada and Kanker were separated from Bastar; Dhamtari District was carved out from Raipur; Janjgir-Champa and Korba districts were created from Bilaspur; Jashpur District was formed from Raigarh; Kawardha District emerged from portions of Bilaspur and Rajnandgaon; Koriya and Surajpur District were split from Surguja; and Mahasamund District was separated from Raipur.
  • On November 1, 2000, these 16 districts were separated from Madhya Pradesh to establish the new state of Chhattisgarh.
  • Later, on January 1, 2012, the Chhattisgarh Government announced the addition of 9 new districts, bringing the total number of districts in Chhattisgarh to 27.
