John William Theodore Youngs: An Overview

• John William Theodore Youngs, commonly known as J. W. T. Youngs or Ted Youngs, was born on August 21, 1910, in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India, and passed away on July 20, 1970, in Santa Cruz, California. He was a distinguished American mathematician.
• Youths, the son of a missionary, pursued his undergraduate studies at Wheaton College and earned his PhD from Ohio State University in 1934 under the guidance of Tibor Radó. Subsequently, he served as a faculty member at Indiana University for 18 years, during which he held the position of mathematics department chair for eight years.
• Starting from 1964, Youngs held a professorship at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he contributed significantly to the development of the mathematics faculty and held the position of the university's academic senate chair.
• Youngs specialized in geometric topology, particularly exploring topics such as the Frechét-equivalence of topological maps. He is renowned for his work on the Ringel-Youngs theorem, specifically the 1968 proof of the Heawood conjecture, which has close ties to the four-color theorem for surfaces of higher genus.
• Besides his academic pursuits, John Youngs served as a consultant for prestigious institutions like Sandia National Laboratories, the Rand Corporation, and the Institute for Defense Analyses. Additionally, he was a trustee at the Carver Research Foundation Institute in Tuskegee. His scholarly endeavors were recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship during 1946-1947.
• As a tribute to his legacy, the University of Santa Cruz instituted a mathematics prize for undergraduates in his honor.

Vallabhacharya

• Vallabhacharya (1479–1531 CE), also known as Vallabha, was a devotional philosopher who founded the Pushti sect of Vaishnavism centered around Krishna in the Braj region of India. He is also known for his philosophy of Shuddha Advaita (Pure Nondualism).
• Vallabhacharya authored numerous texts, including the Anubhashya (a commentary on the Brahm Sutra), the Shodash Granth (sixteen 'stotras' or tracts), and several commentaries on the Bhagavata Purana.
• His writings and kirtan compositions often focus on baby Krishna and his childhood mischiefs with Yashoda (symbolizing unconditional motherly love), as well as on a youthful Krishna and his relationships (erotic mysticism) with cowherding women, illustrating the many lilas (divine pastimes) of Krishna. These works also depict Krishna's protection of the righteous (divine grace) and his triumph over demons and evil forces, using allegory and symbolism.
• Vallabhacharya's legacy is most prominently preserved in the Braj region and at Nathdwara in the Mewar region of India, an important pilgrimage center dedicated to Krishna.
• During his lifetime, Vallabhacharya composed many philosophical and devotional works, including:
