Introduction to Patterns

A pattern is a repeated or logical arrangement of numbers, shapes, or designs. In mathematics, recognizing and playing with patterns helps us predict what comes next by understanding the rule that defines the sequence.

Types of Patterns

Here are the most common types of patterns:

Number Patterns: Sequences where numbers follow a certain rule.

  • Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (adding 2 each time).

Shape Patterns: Sequences of shapes that follow a repeated rule.

  • Example: Circle, Square, Circle, Square (alternating shapes).

Growing Patterns: The sequence increases according to a specific rule.

  • Example: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15 (each time adding one more than the previous difference).

Decreasing Patterns: The sequence reduces by a specific rule.

  • Example: 20, 18, 16, 14 (subtracting 2 each time).

Alphabetical Patterns: Letters follow a certain order or rule.

  • Example: A, C, E, G (skipping one letter).

Steps to Solve a Pattern Problem

  1. Observe the sequence: Look at the elements of the sequence carefully. What changes?
  2. Identify the rule: Is it increasing or decreasing? Is there a set number being added or subtracted?
  3. Test the rule: Check if the rule works for the entire sequence.
  4. Predict the next element: Once the rule is clear, apply it to find the next item.

Examples

Number Patterns

  • Arithmetic Sequence: When numbers increase or decrease by the same value.
    • Example: 5, 10, 15, 20 (adding 5 each time).
  • Geometric Sequence: When each number is multiplied or divided by a constant.
    • Example: 2, 4, 8, 16 (multiplying by 2 each time).

 Shape Patterns

  • Example 1: Circle, Triangle, Circle, Triangle. The next shape will be a circle.
  • Example 2: Square, Pentagon, Hexagon (each time the number of sides increases by 1).

Alphabetical Patterns

  • Example: A, C, E, G (each time the letters skip one in between).

Growing Patterns

  • Example: 1, 2, 4, 7, 11 (the difference between terms grows by 1 each time).

Decreasing Patterns

  • Example: 50, 45, 40, 35 (subtracting 5 each time).

Analytical Reasoning

Analytical reasoning involves looking at data or a problem logically and deducing the correct sequence or relationship between the items. It requires thinking critically and recognizing patterns in information.

Common Analytical Reasoning Questions

  • Series Completion: Complete the series based on a hidden rule.

    • Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, ?
      • Rule: Multiplying by 2.
      • Answer: 32.
  • Pattern Recognition: Identify what comes next in a sequence of shapes or numbers.

    • Example: Circle, Square, Circle, Square, Circle, ?
      • Answer: Square.
  • Odd One Out: Finding the item that does not fit in the pattern.

    • Example: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 28 (28 does not fit because the rest are multiples of 5).

Tips for Solving Pattern Problems

  • Look for simple rules like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  • Check for repeating elements (like every second or third term being the same).
  • For shapes, count the number of sides or angles.
  • In number patterns, find the difference or ratio between terms.

Practice Problems

  • Number Sequence: 3, 6, 12, 24, ?
    • Answer: 48 (multiplying by 2).
  • Shape Sequence: Square, Triangle, Hexagon, Octagon, ?
    • Answer: Decagon (number of sides increases by 2).
