Ans: (c)

  • In this sentence, the correct article is "a" because it refers to learning a type of cycling in general.
  • Using "a" indicates that Rohan is starting to learn cycling, not a specific kind.

Reading

Read the Passage and answer the question that follow (Question 16 to 20)

The African wild dog also goes by the names “Cape hunting dog or painted dog”. Like a zebra’s unique stripe pattern or a human’s fingerprints, no two dogs have the same markings on their coat. Mottled with red, black, brown, white and yellow patches of fur, the effect is as striking as it is essential to survival.
Like satellite dishes, the large, rounded ears of African wild dogs turn around to detect minute sounds in the distance. Another way African wild dogs differ from domestic dogs is that they only have four toes per foot. They can sprint after prey at speeds of up to 44 miles an hour.
African wild dogs live and die for their family—literally. Though the bigger the clan, the more efficient the hunt, non-breeding adults sacrifice their own nourishment to ensure the pups in the group get enough to eat and grow. Subsequently, these generous elders tend to gradually become malnourished and die younger than their peers in packs with fewer offspring.
Even with their finely honed hunting skills, African wild dogs count among the world’s most endangered mammals. According to the IUCN Red List, only around 6,600 wild dogs remain, mostly in Tanzania, northern Mozambique, and southern Africa. The biggest threats facing the species come from their increased contact with humans: habitat loss, villagers seeking revenge against killed livestock, and viral diseases contracted from domestic dogs.
African wild dogs work together in packs of 6 to 20 or more to hunt antelopes and even larger prey such as wildebeests. These highly social beasts communicate with each other by touch, actions, and vocalizations—before a hunt, you can see them playfully circling each other and seeming to psych each other up for the endeavour. They’re also one of the few mammals that care for the old, sick and disabled members of the pack.
- National Geographic

Q16: How does an African wild dog resemble a zebra?
(a) Both have black and white stripes on their bodies.
(b) Both are endangered species.
(c) Both have grass patterns on their bodies.
(d) Both have big ears and short tails.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (a)

  • The African wild dog and the zebra share a similarity in their appearance.
  • Specifically, they both have black and white stripes on their bodies, which is a distinctive feature.
  • This characteristic helps them in camouflage and social interactions within their species.
  • While they are different species, this visual similarity is a notable point of comparison.

Q17: Choose the statement that is accurate.
(a) African wild dogs work together in packs of 6 to 20 or more to hunt.
(b) African wild dogs have large triangular ears.
(c) African wild dogs live for their own survival only.
(d) African wild dogs sprint after prey at speeds of up to 40 miles an hour.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (a)

  • African wild dogs are known for their social behavior, often hunting in groups or packs.
  • These packs typically consist of 6 to 20 or more individuals, which helps them effectively hunt larger prey.
  • While they do have unique ear shapes, the statement about their ears being small and round is incorrect.
  • They are not solitary animals; they rely on teamwork for survival and hunting.

Q18: According to the passage, prior to a hunt, African wild dogs convey messages to one another by _______.
(a) barking at each other
(b) wagging their tails and looking at the prey
(c) touch, actions, and vocalizations
(d) growling at the prey

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • The correct answer is touch, actions, and vocalizations. This means that African wild dogs use various forms of communication to coordinate before they hunt.
  • They do not just bark or growl; instead, they rely on a combination of physical touch, specific actions, and sounds to signal to each other.
  • This method of communication helps them work together effectively, which is crucial for a successful hunt.
  • Understanding these signals is important for their teamwork and survival in the wild.

Q19: Which of the following does not pose a danger to the survival of African wild dogs?
(a) Habitat destruction
(b) Villagers seeking revenge against killed livestock
(c) Viral diseases contracted from domestic dogs
(d) Zero contact with humans

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (d)

  • The correct answer is zero contact with humans, as this does not threaten African wild dogs.
  • In contrast, habitat destruction reduces their living space, while villagers seeking revenge can lead to direct conflict.
  • Viral diseases from domestic dogs can also harm their health.
  • Thus, having no contact with humans is actually beneficial for their survival.

Q20: In the passage, the term ‘sprint’ refers to _______
(a) to run at a very fast speed
(b) to stroll leisurely
(c) to tilt right and left

Ans: (a)

  • The word sprint is commonly used to describe a type of running.
  • It specifically means to run at a very fast speed, which is the correct interpretation here.
  • Other options like walking slowly or crawling do not match the meaning of sprinting.
  • Thus, the best choice that captures the essence of the word is option (a).

Read the Passage and answer the question that follow (Question 21 to 25)

One day, a boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young girl opened the door.
Instead of a meal, he asked for a glass of water. She thought he looked hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk.
He drank it slowly and then asked, “ How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother taught us never to accept payment for kindness.”
“Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he replied.
As the boy left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in humanity had been restored. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Years later, that young girl became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her. After meeting her, he went back to the consultation room, determined to save her life. From that day on, he gave all his attention to her case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested that the business office pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something in the margin, and the bill was sent to her room.
She feared opening it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words: Paid in full with one glass of milk. Signed by Dr. Howard Kelly.

Q21: Choose the statement which is incorrect.
(a) The boy decided that he would ask for a meal at the next house.
(b) The boy’s trust in people had been broken.
(c) The young girl said, “Mother taught us never to accept payment for kindness.”
(d) After many years, the young girl became critically ill.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (b)

  • The statement that is incorrect is about the boy's trust in people. It suggests that his faith in humanity was broken, which is not true.
  • In the story, the boy's experience with kindness is still present, and he continues to seek help.
  • The other statements accurately reflect the events and sentiments expressed in the narrative.
  • Thus, option (b) is the only one that does not align with the overall message of the story.

Q22: According to the passage, when Dr. Kelly heard the name of the town the girl came from, _______ filled his eyes.
(a) tears
(b) darkness
(c) a fear of danger
(d) a strange light

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (d)

  • When Dr. Kelly heard the girl's town name, it triggered a strong emotional response.
  • His eyes were filled with a strange light, indicating surprise or recognition.
  • This suggests that the town had a significant meaning or memory for him.
  • The other options do not accurately reflect the emotional reaction described in the passage.

Q23: According to the passage, Dr. Kelly requested that the _______ pass the final bill to him for approval.
(a) young girl
(b) business office
(c) other locals
(d) girl’s parents

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (b)

  • Dr. Kelly needed the final bill to be sent to him for his approval.
  • He specifically asked the business office to handle this task.
  • This indicates that the business office is responsible for processing such requests.
  • The other options do not fit the context of the request made by Dr. Kelly.

Q24: Why did the local doctors refer the girl to the city?
(a) Because they were baffled by her rare disease case.
(b) Because her parents wanted a costly treatment.
(c) Because they did not want to save her life.
(d) Because they were not compensated for her care.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (a)

  • The local doctors were confused and unable to treat the girl's rare disease effectively.
  • They decided to send her to the city where there are more specialized medical facilities.
  • This decision was made to ensure she receives the best possible care for her condition.
  • It was not about the cost or their willingness to help, but rather their inability to handle her case.

Q25: Find a word from the passage that means the same as ‘confused’.
(a) Restored
(b) Baffled
(c) Determined
(d) Alarmed

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

  • The sentence is asking if the parents are aware of the student's lateness today, which refers to a past event.
  • Using was correctly matches the past tense needed for the context of the question.
  • Other options like have, will, and will be do not fit the past context of the situation.

(a) bigger
(b) big
(c) biggest

Ans: (b)

  • The sentence compares Shreya's project to another project.
  • In this context, the correct word is big, which is the appropriate form to use in comparisons.
  • Using bigger or biggest would be incorrect because they imply a different type of comparison.
  • Thus, the correct choice is big, making the sentence grammatically correct.

Ans: (c)

  • The correct answer is have because Sameer is talking about something he did in the past that is still relevant now.
  • When he says "I have my name on it," it indicates that he currently possesses the book with his name on it.
  • Using has or had would not fit the context of the sentence as they imply different meanings.
  • Having is also incorrect because it does not fit grammatically in this sentence.

(a) When
(b) Why

(d) What

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • The question is asking for the method or manner in which Kiran reached quickly.
  • "How" is the appropriate word to inquire about the manner of reaching fast.
  • The other options like "When", "Why", and "What" do not fit the context of asking about speed.
  • Thus, the correct response is "How".

Q30: Teacher: _______ student is supposed to take only one sheet.
(a) Both
(b) Each
(c) Such
(d) All

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (b)

  • The correct word to fill in the blank is Each. This indicates that every individual student should take one sheet.

  • Other options like Both and All do not fit because they imply groups rather than individuals.
  • Thus, the sentence clearly communicates that every student is expected to follow the same rule.

Q32: _______ the teacher nor the students _______ able to give a satisfactory explanation.
(a) Is
(b) have
(c) were
(d) has

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • The correct answer is were because the sentence refers to both the teacher and the students as a plural subject.
  • In English, when using "neither...nor," the verb agrees with the nearest subject, which in this case is students (plural).
  • Thus, the correct form is were, indicating that neither the teacher nor the students were able to provide a satisfactory explanation.
  • Options like is and has do not fit because they are singular forms, while have is incorrect in this context.

Q33: Choose the part of the sentence that has an error
Our father is taking us out for the dinner tonight.
(a) Our father
(b) is taking
(c) us out for
(d) the dinner tonight

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (d)

  • The phrase "the dinner" is incorrect in this context. It should simply be "dinner" without the article "the".
  • In English, we often say "going out for dinner" rather than "going out for the dinner".
  • Thus, the error lies in the use of "the" before "dinner".
  • Correcting this makes the sentence sound more natural and grammatically correct.

  • Among the options, soothe is the best match as it also means to comfort or relieve someone’s distress.
  • On the other hand, worry, incite, and disturb imply negative actions that do not align with calming someone.
  • Thus, the correct synonym for placate is soothe.

Q35: Choose the correct option to complete the conversation

Elena: I agree.
(a) liking
(b) likes
(c) loved
(d) like

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 2 | English Olympiad Class 4  View Answer

Ans: (d)

  • The correct answer is like because it matches the plural subject "all of us."
  • In English, when the subject is plural, we use the base form of the verb, which is "like" in this case.
  • Options (a) and (b) do not fit because "liking" is a gerund and "likes" is singular.
  • Option (c) "loved" is in the past tense, which does not fit the context of the conversation.
