Key Points of the Story
Detailed Summary
Once upon a time, there was a Maharaja who ruled a place called Travancore. He was a very important person and wanted everything to be perfect, especially when he was throwing a big dinner party at his palace. The Maharaja wanted to impress his guests with delicious food. So, on the day of the grand dinner, he went to the kitchen to see what the cook was preparing.
As the Maharaja looked around, he noticed something in a basket. It was a lot of vegetable scraps, which are the bits and pieces left over after cooking. The Maharaja asked the cook, “What are you going to do with those vegetable scraps?” The cook replied, “They are waste. We will throw them away.” Hearing this, the Maharaja felt it was wrong to waste food. He told the cook firmly, “You cannot waste all these bits and pieces of vegetables. Find a way to use them.” Then, the Maharaja walked away, leaving the cook to think.
The cook was puzzled and stared at the vegetable scraps for a long time. He didn’t want to throw them away, so he started thinking hard. Suddenly, an idea popped into his head! He decided to wash the vegetable scraps and clean them really well. After that, he cut them into long strips, making them look nice and ready to cook.
Next, the cook took some fresh coconut, green chillies, and garlic. He ground them together to make a tasty paste. He added this paste along with some salt to the pot filled with the cooking vegetable strips. As he cooked, a wonderful smell started coming from the pot, making everyone in the kitchen curious and hungry.
To make the dish even better, the cook whipped some curd and added it to the cooking vegetables. He also poured in a few spoonfuls of coconut oil and decorated the dish with curry leaves. When he finished, he looked at the new dish proudly. It was colourful and smelled amazing!
When the evening came, the cook served this new dish to all the guests at the dinner. Everyone wanted to know what this new dish was called. The cook thought for a moment and then named it “avial,” which is pronounced as “uh-vi-ul.”
To everyone’s surprise, the dish became very famous! Avial was loved by many and is now a special part of traditional Kerala feasts. All of this wonderful food came from what people thought was waste! This story teaches us that sometimes things we think are useless can turn into something amazing when we use our creativity and think differently.
