"Today will be good"

It was still dark outside when Ella woke up, but she could already sense something different about the day. She rubbed her eyes, blinking into the morning dimness. Yesterday had been one of those days that seemed determined to weigh her down. The rain, the missed train, the long hours at work – it all added up to a heavy sense of weariness. But today, she felt an unexplainable lightness.

"Today will be good," she whispered to herself, trying the words out as if they were a secret spell. It felt strange at first, but as she repeated them, a smile tugged at her lips.

Her morning routine was nothing special – coffee, toast, her favorite blue sweater – but everything seemed to flow easily. Even the toast browned just right, and she didn’t spill coffee on her sweater like she often did. It was a small victory, but she savored it as she sipped her coffee.

On the way to work, Ella noticed things she usually didn’t: the brightness of a cardinal in a tree, the way the breeze felt soft instead of biting. When she got to the bus stop, she even found herself humming along to the faint sound of music someone was playing nearby. The bus arrived just as she reached the stop – no waiting in the cold today – and she found a seat by the window. Everything felt strangely… good.

When she got to work, there was a fresh pot of coffee, and her favorite muffins from the bakery down the street were set out in the break room, thanks to a coworker who’d decided to treat everyone. Even her inbox seemed friendlier – a thank-you email from her boss, a funny meme from a friend, and a surprising invitation from a colleague to go out for lunch. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so genuinely welcomed by the day.

As the hours passed, Ella realized the day wasn’t perfect. There were still minor inconveniences, little frustrations. But there was also a choice in every moment: to let those moments cloud the day, or to hold onto that morning promise. Today will be good.

When she left the office, she walked a different route home, one that took her past a park where kids were playing. She lingered for a moment, watching them laugh and shout, reminded of how simple joy could be. When she finally reached her door, her face was glowing from the cold and a lingering smile.

Today hadn’t been extraordinary, but it had been good in a way she hadn’t expected. And as she settled into bed that night, Ella repeated those words, holding them close. Tomorrow would be another day, but today… today had been good.
