About the Unit: Our Environment

This unit explores the world around us - the land, water, plants, animals, and sky. It shows how people's food, clothes, houses, festivals, and daily life depend on different landforms such as plains, deserts, coasts, and mountains, and encourages observation and care for the environment.

Class Activity: Different Lands, Different Lives

• Children shared holiday trips: Chandni (beach, Odisha), Ritika (desert, Rajasthan), Gurpreet (Amritsar, Punjab), Nayan (mountains, Sikkim).
• Task: write place names and one unique feature; ask friends and note nearby experiences if holidays were local.

Land of Agriculture - Punjab (Gurpreet)

• Flat land with fertile soil ideal for farming; many green fields and active farmers.
• Main crops mentioned: wheat, maize, mustard.
• Typical food: makki di roti, sarson da saag, and lassi.
• Warm family welcome: "Jee aayan nu puttar!" meaning "Welcome, my dear child!"
• Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib): covered with gold, has a holy sarovar, and a large langar (free kitchen) run by volunteers who cook, serve, and clean.

Desert - Rajasthan (Ritika)

• A desert is a very dry place with little rainfall; only a few plants grow.
• Plants: cactus (stores water in stem), khejri, babool.
• Animals: camel (called "ship of the desert"), lizards, wild cats, pythons, eagles.
• People and culture: colourful bangles, bandhini dupatta, ghaghra, men's turbans, instruments like khartal and sarangi.
• Houses and water: homes made of mud with thatched roofs; many have tanka water tanks to store water.
• Food: dal-bati-churma and ker sangri.
• Famous fort: Jaisalmer Fort - golden sandstone, tall thick walls, still lived in today, featured in the film "Sonar Kella".

Seashore - Odisha (Chandni)

• People's activities: fishermen go to sea to catch fish, artists make sand art, people collect sea shells, enjoy boat rides and watch sea animals like turtles, and watch Odissi dance.
• Trees and plants: coconut palms grow near the sea; coastal plants suit salty air and sandy soil.
• Clothing: light, comfortable clothes for warm weather; women may wear the Sambalpuri saree.
• Famous place: Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri with huge gates and carvings; the city is famous for Rath Yatra, when people pull large chariots of Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra.
• Challenges: coastal regions face strong winds and cyclones that can harm homes, crops, people, animals, and trees. Research and preparedness (early warnings, planning, management) help protect lives; the Government of Odisha has been recognised for successful protection during cyclones.
• Ways to prepare for cyclones: build stronger homes, store food and water, and follow government warnings.

Mountains - Sikkim (Nayan)

• What mountains are: high, rocky landforms with steep slopes; often cold and snow-covered in places like the Himalayas.
• Sikkim: rich plants and animals; trees such as oak, pine, walnut, and chestnut.
• Festivals and culture: colourful clothes and festivals like Loosong and Namsoong.
• Animals: yak lives in cold areas and has thick fur to stay warm.
• Clothing and lifestyle: people wear warm clothes like the bakhu.
• Houses and safety: traditional houses are made of wood with slanting roofs so rain and snow slide off.
• Problems: during the rainy season heavy rain can loosen soil and cause landslides; steep slopes make soil and rocks slide down.
• Safety measures against landslides and disasters: build strong retaining walls, avoid building in risky spots, use early warning systems, move people to safer places when needed.
• Community help after disasters: provide food, clothes, and shelter; rebuild houses and roads; support each other.

Difficult Words

• Fertile: Land that is suitable for growing crops.
• Langar: A free community kitchen in a Gurudwara that provides meals to everyone. The langar at the Golden Temple is one of the largest community services in the world, where volunteers cook, serve, and clean up.
