Answer Key

1. Ans: (A) - chisel is to sculptor
Explanation: This is a tool/user relationship. A scalpel is a specialized cutting tool used by a surgeon, just as a chisel is a specialized cutting tool used by a sculptor. Choice (B) is incorrect because patient is not a tool. Choice (D) is incorrect because canvas is the material worked on, not the tool used.
2. Ans: (B) - barren is to fertility
Explanation: This is a "lack of quality" relationship. Arid means lacking moisture, just as barren means lacking fertility. Choice (A) is incorrect because humid means having dampness, not lacking it. Choice (C) is incorrect because frigid relates to temperature but doesn't indicate a lack of it.
3. Ans: (B) - playwright is to drama
Explanation: This is a creator/creation relationship. A composer creates a symphony, just as a playwright creates a drama. Choice (A) is incorrect because a conductor interprets but doesn't create an orchestra. Choice (C) is incorrect because an actor performs rather than creates a stage.
4. Ans: (C) - glance is to stare

Choice (A) is incorrect because murmur and speak differ in volume but not as dramatically. Choice (E) represents opposites but not degrees of the same action.
5. Ans: (C) - scene is to play
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship. A chapter is a structural division of a book, just as a scene is a structural division of a play. 15. Ans: (D) - key is to piano

16. Ans: (C) - scorching is to hot

18. Ans: (B) - amateur is to professional
Explanation: This is an antonym or inexperienced/experienced relationship. A novice is someone inexperienced while an expert is highly experienced, just as an amateur is someone who does something without professional status while a professional does it for a living with expertise. Choice (A) is related but less precisely parallel. Choice (D) is incorrect because beginner and learner are synonyms.
19. Ans: (A) - mine is to coal
Explanation: This is a source/resource relationship. A quarry is a place from which marble is extracted, just as a mine is a place from which coal is extracted. Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Magnify means to make larger while diminish means to make smaller, just as increase means to make greater while decrease means to make lesser. Choice (A) is incorrect because enlarge and expand are synonyms. Choice (E) is incorrect because amplify and intensify are synonyms.
22. Ans: (A) - duckling is to duck
Explanation: This is a young animal/adult animal relationship. A cygnet is a young swan, just as a duckling is a young duck. Choice (C) is also correct in relationship but (A) is more commonly known. Choice (B) is incorrect because flock is a group, not an adult. Choice (D) is incorrect because egg is a pre-hatched stage.
23. Ans: (A) - wrench is to mechanic

Choice (A) is incorrect because clear describes glass rather than being an opposite. Choice (D) provides examples rather than direct opposites.
25. Ans: (A) - practice is to game
Explanation: This is a preparation/event relationship. A rehearsal is preparation for a performance, just as practice is preparation for a game. Choice (B) is incorrect because audition is a tryout, not preparation for the final event. Choice (D) is incorrect because script is the material used, not the preparation.
26. Ans: (B) - tooth is to jaw
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship with multiple identical components. Vertebrae (plural bones) make up the spine, just as teeth (plural) make up the jaw. Choice (A) is too general. Choice (E) is less precise because ribs make up the rib cage, and the chest includes more than just ribs.
27. Ans: (B) - famished is to hungry
Explanation: This is a degree of intensity relationship. Parched means extremely thirsty, just as famished means extremely hungry. Choice (A) is incorrect because dry doesn't mean extremely desert. Choice (D) is incorrect because dehydrated is a state related to liquid but not a degree of wanting liquid.
