Answer Key

1. Ans: (B) - composer is to symphony
Explanation: This is a specialist/work product relationship. A sculptor creates a statue as their finished work, just as a composer creates a symphony. (A) is incorrect because a painter uses a canvas but doesn't create the canvas itself; the painting is the product. (C) is incorrect because a blueprint is a plan, not the finished building that an architect designs.
2. Ans: (A) - vacant is to occupants
Explanation: This is a lack of quality relationship. Arid means lacking moisture, just as vacant means lacking occupants. (B) is incorrect because humid contains water, not lacking it. (C) is incorrect because parched describes the condition caused by lack of water, but doesn't show the same "lack of" relationship.
3. Ans: (C) - scale is to weight
Explanation: This is an instrument/measurement relationship. A thermometer measures temperature, just as a scale measures weight. Both (A) and (C) work, but (C) is the better parallel because both are physical measurements of properties. (B) is incorrect because a ruler measures length, not wood. (D) and (E) are incorrect because these instruments observe objects rather than measure properties.
3. Ans: (A) - clock is to time
Explanation: This is an instrument/measurement relationship. A thermometer measures temperature, just as a clock measures time. (C) scale is to weight also works with the same relationship. (B) is incorrect because a ruler measures length, not wood itself. (D) and (E) are incorrect because these instruments magnify or observe objects rather than measure properties.
4. Ans: (C) - diligent is to negligent
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Meticulous (extremely careful and precise) is the opposite of careless, just as diligent is the opposite of negligent. (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect because they present synonym pairs rather than antonyms. (E) is also a synonym pair.
5. Ans: (C) - scale is to fish
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship showing a protective outer covering. A petal is one of the outer parts of a flower, just as a scale is one of the outer protective parts of a fish. (A) is incorrect because while a leaf is part of a tree, it serves a different function (photosynthesis) rather than being a repeated outer covering. (B), (D), and (E) are all plant parts but don't show the same relationship of multiple identical protective outer parts.
6. Ans: (A) - rain is to flood
Explanation: This is a cause/effect relationship where an extreme of one thing causes another. A drought (lack of rain) can cause a famine, just as excessive rain can cause a flood. (B) and (C) are incorrect because heat and cold are typical characteristics of those seasons, not causes of them. (D) is incorrect because wind doesn't cause breeze; breeze is a type of wind. (E) is incorrect because clouds don't necessarily cause storms.
7. Ans: (A) - scarce is to rare
Explanation: This is a synonym relationship. Prolific means highly productive or producing abundantly, making them synonyms, just as scarce and rare are synonyms. (B), (C), (D), and (E) are all antonym pairs, not synonym pairs.
8. Ans: (B) - chisel is to sculptor
Explanation: This is a tool/user relationship. A scalpel is the primary cutting tool used by a surgeon, just as a chisel is the primary cutting tool used by a sculptor. (A) is incorrect because a stethoscope is used on a patient, not by a patient. (C) and (D) are incorrect because they show workplace/worker relationships, not tool/user. (E) is incorrect because while nurses use bandages, a bandage is not a specialized professional tool in the same way.
9. Ans: (A) - caterpillar is to butterfly
Explanation: This is a developmental stage relationship showing metamorphosis. A tadpole is the larval stage that develops into a frog, just as a caterpillar is the larval stage that develops into a butterfly. (B) is incorrect because an egg is not a living, mobile stage like a tadpole. (C) is too general. (D) and (E) show category/member relationships, not developmental stages.
10. Ans: (B) - chaos is to orderly
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Cacophony (harsh, discordant noise) is the opposite of melodious (pleasant-sounding), just as chaos is the opposite of orderly. (A) is reversed; harmony and discordant are opposites but in the wrong order. (C), (D), and (E) are incorrect because they don't present clear antonym pairs.
11. Ans: (A) - rose is to flower
Explanation: This is a member/category relationship. An oak is a specific type of tree, just as a rose is a specific type of flower. (B) is incorrect because it shows a part/whole relationship. (C) is incorrect because it shows a source/product relationship. (D) is a part/whole relationship. (E) shows near-synonyms, not member/category.
12. Ans: (A) - trivial is to important
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Frivolous (lacking seriousness or importance) is the opposite of serious, just as trivial is the opposite of important. (B), (C), (D), and (E) are all synonym pairs or closely related terms, not antonyms.
13. Ans: (B) - poet is to verse
Explanation: This is a specialist/work product relationship. A journalist produces articles as their written work, just as a poet produces verse. (A) is incorrect because a teacher educates students but doesn't produce them. (C) is incorrect because an editor refines but doesn't originally produce the newspaper. (D) is close but "news" is too general; reporters cover news but their product is a news story or report. (E) is incorrect because a pen is a tool, not a product.
14. Ans: (C) - breeze is to gale
Explanation: This is a degree of intensity relationship. A whisper is quiet speech while a shout is loud speech, showing opposite extremes of volume, just as a breeze is gentle wind while a gale is violent wind. (A) and (B) show some degree difference but not the same extreme contrast. (D) and (E) show quality differences but not the same action at different intensities.
15. Ans: (A) - wheel is to car
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship where the part is essential for the primary function. A lens is an essential functional part of a camera, just as a wheel is an essential functional part of a car. (B) is incorrect because film is what the camera acts upon, not a part of it. (C) is another part of a camera but the analogy asks for a different whole object. (D) shows a tool/user relationship. (E) is incorrect because a frame contains a painting but isn't functionally part of the painting.
16. Ans: (A) - freezing is to melting
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship showing opposite processes. Evaporation is the process of liquid becoming gas, while condensation is gas becoming liquid-opposite processes. Similarly, freezing is liquid becoming solid, while melting is solid becoming liquid. (B) is incorrect because boiling and heating are related but not opposite processes. (C) is close but less precise than (A). (D) and (E) show states of matter, not processes.
17. Ans: (B) - tenacious is to persistent
Explanation: This is a synonym relationship. Obstinate and stubborn both mean unreasonably determined not to change one's mind, making them synonyms, just as tenacious and persistent both mean holding firmly to something. (A), (C), (D), and (E) all present antonym pairs, not synonyms.
18. Ans: (A) - wrench is to mechanic
Explanation: This is a tool/user relationship. A hammer is a primary tool used by a carpenter, just as a wrench is a primary tool used by a mechanic. (B) is incorrect because it shows a tool/material relationship. (C) is another tool but asks for the user. (D) is too general. (E) shows a product/process relationship.
19. Ans: (A) - indifference is to concern
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Apathy (lack of interest or emotion) is the opposite of enthusiasm, just as indifference is the opposite of concern. (B) is incorrect because boredom and tired are related but not opposites. (C), (D), and (E) are incorrect because they present related terms or synonyms rather than antonyms.
20. Ans: (C) - scene is to play
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship. A chapter is a major division of a book, just as a scene is a major division of a play. (A) is incorrect because a page is a physical unit, not a structural division like a chapter. (B) is reversed; a paragraph contains sentences. (D) is incorrect because words are alphabetically listed in a dictionary, not structural divisions. (E) shows a creator/creation relationship.
21. Ans: (A) - reduce is to shrink
Explanation: This is a synonym relationship. Magnify and enlarge both mean to make bigger, just as reduce and shrink both mean to make smaller. (B), (C), and (D) are antonym pairs. (E) is grammatically inconsistent and presents an antonym relationship.
22. Ans: (B) - dam is to flood
Explanation: This is a prevention/threat relationship. Quarantine is used to prevent the spread of contagion, just as a dam is used to prevent or control floods. (A) is incorrect because a hospital treats illness rather than prevents it. (C) is close but medicine treats disease rather than prevents its spread. (D) shows a professional/patient relationship. (E) is close but a vaccine prevents infection in an individual rather than preventing spread.
23. Ans: (A) - duckling is to duck
Explanation: This is a young/adult animal relationship. A gosling is a young goose, just as a duckling is a young duck. (B) is incorrect because a chick hatches from an egg; egg is not the adult form. (C), (D), and (E) show different relationships unrelated to developmental stages.
24. Ans: (B) - soaked is to drenched
Explanation: This is a synonym relationship. Parched and arid both mean extremely dry, just as soaked and drenched both mean extremely wet. (A) presents antonyms. (C) is incorrect because moist and humid are related but represent different degrees rather than being synonyms. (D) and (E) show different relationships.
25. Ans: (B) - sluggish is to vigorous
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Lethargic (lacking energy) is the opposite of energetic, just as sluggish is the opposite of vigorous. (A) presents synonyms or related terms. (C), (D), and (E) are incorrect because they don't present clear antonym pairs with the same strength of opposition.
26. Ans: (A) - vineyard is to grape
Explanation: This is a place/product relationship. An orchard is a place where apples (and other fruit) are grown, just as a vineyard is a place where grapes are grown. (B) is incorrect because it shows a workplace/worker relationship. (C), (D), and (E) show different part/whole or location relationships but not the same cultivation/product relationship.
27. Ans: (A) - engineer is to bridge
Explanation: This is a designer/design product relationship. An architect designs a building, just as an engineer designs a bridge. Both are professionals who create plans for structures. (B) is reversed and shows the wrong relationship. (C) is too vague. (D) is incorrect because a blueprint is the medium, not the final product. (E) is incorrect because a contractor executes plans but doesn't design.
28. Ans: (B) - rust is to iron
Explanation: This is a deterioration/material relationship. Tarnish is the process of discoloration that affects silver, just as rust is the process of oxidation that affects iron. (A) is incorrect because polish improves metal rather than deteriorates it. (C) is incorrect because shine is a positive quality. (D) shows acid as the cause rather than the process. (E) presents antonyms rather than the specific deterioration relationship.
29. Ans: (A) - wordy is to brief
Explanation: This is an antonym relationship. Verbose (using more words than necessary) is the opposite of concise (expressing much in few words), just as wordy is the opposite of brief. (B) is incorrect because speaking is not an antonym of talkative. (C) presents synonyms. (D) presents synonyms. (E) presents synonyms.
30. Ans: (B) - speedometer is to velocity
Explanation: This is an instrument/measurement relationship. A barometer measures atmospheric pressure, just as a speedometer measures velocity (speed). (A) is close, but thermometer measures temperature, not heat specifically. (C) is incorrect because an odometer measures distance traveled, not the car itself. (D) is too general. (E) is incorrect because a compass indicates direction but doesn't measure it quantitatively.
