Answer Key

1. Ans: (B) - composer is to symphony
Explanation: This is a specialist/work product relationship. A sculptor creates a statue as their work product, just as a composer creates a symphony. (A) is wrong because a painter uses a brush but doesn't create it. (D) is wrong because an architect designs a building but is not the sole creator in the way a sculptor creates a statue.
2. Ans: (B) - famished is to food
Explanation: This is a lack of quality relationship. Something parched lacks moisture, just as something famished lacks food. (A) is wrong because frozen things contain ice, not lack it. (D) is wrong because wealthy means having money, not lacking it.
3. Ans: (B) - wrench is to mechanic
Explanation: This is a tool/user relationship. A scalpel is a specialized tool used by a surgeon, just as a wrench is a specialized tool used by a mechanic. (A) is wrong because while correct, it reverses the order of the relationship. (D) is wrong because a hammer is used on a nail, not by a nail.
4. Ans: (A) - kind is to cruel
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Benevolent (wishing good for others) is opposite to malevolent (wishing harm), just as kind is opposite to cruel. (C) is wrong because generous and giving are synonyms. (E) is wrong because thoughtful and careless are not as precise opposites as the original pair.
5. Ans: (A) - caterpillar is to butterfly
Explanation: This is a young/mature form relationship showing metamorphosis. A tadpole transforms into a frog through metamorphosis, just as a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. (B) is wrong because an egg is not the immature form, it's a container. (C) is wrong because a cub to bear is simple growth, not metamorphosis.
6. Ans: (C) - scene is to play
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship. A chapter is a division of a book, just as a scene is a division of a play. (A) is wrong because the relationship is reversed. (B) is close but a page is a physical component, not a narrative division like chapter.
7. Ans: (B) - cold is to tundra
Explanation: This is a characteristic/place relationship. Arid (very dry) is the defining characteristic of a desert, just as cold is the defining characteristic of a tundra. (A) is wrong because wet is not a defining characteristic unique to oceans. (E) is wrong because green is a result of forest vegetation, not an environmental characteristic like arid.
8. Ans: (B) - gigantic is to large
Explanation: This is a degree of intensity relationship. Meticulous is an extreme or intense form of being careful, just as gigantic is an extreme form of large. (A) is wrong because the relationship is reversed. (D) is wrong because happy and joyful are roughly synonymous without clear degree difference.
9. Ans: (A) - poet is to poem
Explanation: This is a specialist/work product relationship. A novelist creates a novel, just as a poet creates a poem. (B) is wrong because an artist displays work in a museum but doesn't create the museum. (E) is wrong because a musician uses an instrument but doesn't create it.
10. Ans: (B) - exercise is to fatigue
Explanation: This is a cause/effect relationship. Friction causes heat, just as exercise causes fatigue. (A) is wrong because the sun doesn't cause light, it produces light as its nature. (D) is close but fire and smoke are more of a simultaneous production than pure cause/effect.
11. Ans: (A) - clear is to cloudy
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Transparent (allowing light to pass through completely) is opposite to opaque (blocking light), just as clear is opposite to cloudy. (B) is wrong because visible/invisible doesn't capture the light-transmission quality. (E) is wrong because shiny/dull relates to reflection, not transmission of light.
12. Ans: (A) - dam is to flood
Explanation: This is an official measure/control relationship. Quarantine is a measure used to control the spread of disease, just as a dam is a structure used to control flood. (B) is wrong because medicine treats disease rather than controls its spread. (E) is wrong because a bandage covers a wound rather than prevents or controls it.
13. Ans: (A) - bouquet is to flowers
Explanation: This is a collection/member relationship. A constellation is a recognized grouping of stars, just as a bouquet is an arranged grouping of flowers. (D) is wrong because a forest is a natural collection, not an arranged grouping. (E) is wrong because flock refers to animals, not arranged objects.
14. Ans: (C) - fearful is to brave
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Timid (lacking courage) is opposite to bold (showing courage), just as fearful is opposite to brave. (A) is close but shy/outgoing relates more to social behavior. (D) is wrong because weak/strong is physical rather than about courage.
15. Ans: (A) - pen is to writer
Explanation: This is a tool/user relationship. A chisel is the primary tool of a sculptor, just as a pen is the primary tool of a writer. (B) is wrong because an easel supports the work but isn't used to create it. (C) is wrong because a stage is a location, not a tool.
16. Ans: (B) - freezing is to cold
Explanation: This is a degree of intensity relationship. Exhausted is an extreme form of tired, just as freezing is an extreme form of cold. (A) is correct but less precise than (B). (E) is wrong because angry is more intense than annoyed, reversing the relationship.
17. Ans: (A) - speedometer is to velocity
Explanation: This is an instrument/measurement relationship. A thermostat regulates temperature, just as a speedometer measures and can regulate velocity. (C) is wrong because a clock measures time but doesn't regulate it. (D) is close but a scale only measures, it doesn't regulate weight.
18. Ans: (A) - milk is to cheese
Explanation: This is a raw material/product relationship. Wheat is processed to make flour, just as milk is processed to make cheese. (B) is wrong because it reverses the relationship (producer/product). (C) is wrong because bread is made from flour, not wheat directly in the same way.
19. Ans: (A) - social is to isolated
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Gregarious (enjoying company of others) is opposite to solitary (preferring to be alone), just as social is opposite to isolated. (C) is wrong because talkative/quiet relates to speaking, not social preference. (D) is close but outgoing/shy is less precise than social/isolated.
20. Ans: (B) - ignorant is to knowledge
Explanation: This is a lack of quality relationship. Lethargic means lacking energy, just as ignorant means lacking knowledge. (C) is wrong because hungry is a desire for food, not a lack of it in the same way. (D) is wrong because weak suggests reduced strength rather than absence.
21. Ans: (A) - calf is to cow
Explanation: This is a young animal/adult animal relationship. A foal is a young horse, just as a calf is a young cow. (D) is close and correct in relationship type, making this a challenging question where both work. (E) is wrong because the relationship is reversed (adult to young).
22. Ans: (B) - chain is to links
Explanation: This is a collection/member relationship. An archipelago is a chain or group of islands, just as a chain is made up of links. (A) is wrong because a single mountain can have multiple peaks. (E) is wrong because continents don't necessarily form a connected group.
23. Ans: (B) - chaos is to orderly
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Cacophony (harsh, discordant mixture of sounds) is opposite to melodious (pleasant sounding), just as chaos is opposite to orderly. (C) is wrong because loud/quiet relates to volume, not quality of sound. (E) is very close but uses nouns rather than adjectives.
24. Ans: (C) - nourish is to body
Explanation: This is an action/object relationship. To irrigate is to supply water to crops to sustain them, just as to nourish is to supply nutrients to the body to sustain it. (A) is wrong because it's too specific (water) versus the broader concept. (D) is wrong because harvest is gathering, not sustaining.
25. Ans: (B) - playwright is to drama
Explanation: This is a specialist/work product relationship. A journalist writes an article, just as a playwright writes a drama. (A) is wrong because a reporter covers news but doesn't create it. (C) is wrong because an editor revises rather than creates a newspaper.
26. Ans: (C) - scale is to fish
Explanation: This is a part/whole relationship where the part covers the surface. A petal is one of the parts that make up the outer surface of a flower, just as a scale is one of the parts that cover a fish. (A) is wrong because a leaf is not part of a tree in the same covering sense. (D) is wrong because a feather is part of a bird, and wing is not the whole.
27. Ans: (C) - amplify is to increase
Explanation: This is a synonym pair relationship. Magnify means to enlarge, just as amplify means to increase. (A) is wrong because reduce and shrink are synonyms but in the opposite direction. (E) is wrong because multiply and divide are antonyms.
28. Ans: (A) - spark is to fire
Explanation: This is a cause/initiator relationship. A catalyst initiates or speeds up a reaction without being consumed, just as a spark initiates fire. (C) is wrong because fuel is consumed, unlike a catalyst. (E) is wrong because heat is a condition rather than an initiator.
29. Ans: (A) - sleeping is to awake
Explanation: This is an antonym pair relationship. Dormant (temporarily inactive) is opposite to active, just as sleeping is opposite to awake. (C) is close but still/moving is about motion rather than state of activity. (E) is wrong because resting is not as complete an opposite to working as dormant is to active.
30. Ans: (A) - mow is to lawn
Explanation: This is an action/object relationship. To prune is to trim and shape a hedge, just as to mow is to cut and maintain a lawn. (C) is close but less specific to maintenance. (D) is wrong because weeding is removing unwanted plants, not shaping.
