Why this document matters Every year, thousands of students face form rejection, admit-card issues, or exam-day problems because of avoidable errors in the application form. This list is based on recurring NTA advisories and student experiences. Read each section carefully and correct any discrepancies before submission. |
Category mistakes
Errors in category selection or submission of certificates often cause loss of reservation or outright rejection. Check the following carefully before uploading documents or choosing your category on the form.
- Selecting OBC without 'Non-Creamy Layer' - a regular OBC certificate does not qualify for OBC reservation in the All India Quota; ensure your OBC certificate explicitly mentions Non-Creamy Layer where required and is issued by the competent authority.
- Uploading an expired EWS certificate - the certificate must be valid for the specified financial year; for this cycle it must be for the financial year 2025-26. An expired or out-of-scope EWS certificate will not be accepted.
- Selecting General even if you belong to a reserved category - choosing General intentionally or by mistake causes you to lose reservation benefits for that application; you will not be able to claim reservation later for the same submission.
- Uploading a category certificate from the wrong state authority - state-specific reservations require certificates issued by the appropriate state authority; a certificate from another state or an inappropriate issuing body can be rejected.
Name and date of birth mistakes
Name and date-of-birth mismatches are among the most serious issues because they affect identity verification on the exam day and during admission. Always use the same primary document across the application.
- Name not matching Class 10 certificate - even minor spelling differences, missing initials, or inverted order of names cause problems at the time of entry to the exam centre and during admission verification. Use the name exactly as in the Class 10 / secondary school certificate.
- Date of birth from a different document - if your Aadhaar, passport, and Class 10 certificate show different dates, use the date that appears on the Class 10/board certificate unless instructions state otherwise. Keep supporting documents ready to resolve discrepancies.
- Using short forms or nicknames - do not use abbreviations, initials only, or nicknames in the name fields. Enter the full name that appears on the official school/board certificate.
Photo and signature mistakes
Technical and format requirements for the photograph and signature are strictly enforced. Follow the specifications precisely to avoid rejection.
- Photo with a coloured background - the photograph must have a white background unless the instructions state otherwise; coloured or patterned backgrounds are commonly rejected.
- Old photograph (more than 3 months old) - the photograph should be recent. Many authorities require photos taken within the last 3 months; check the specific instruction and use a fresh photograph.
- Signature in capital letters - a signature should be in your normal handwriting; signatures in all capital letters are often not accepted. Sign as you normally sign on legal documents.
- Uploading a photo taken with a mobile phone against a wall - poor lighting, shadow, tilt, or low resolution causes automatic or manual rejection. Use a clear, well-lit, frontal photograph with the head and shoulder visible.
- File size outside the allowed range - photos below 10 KB or above 200 KB (example limits) are commonly rejected; follow the file-format and size limits given in the official instructions and use recommended formats (JPEG/PNG) and exact pixel/dimensions if specified.
All official communications, OTPs, and admit-card links are sent to the email and mobile number you provide. Use contact details that you control and will continue to access.
- Using a parent's email or phone - avoid this because all communications come to this account; if you use a parent's contact, ensure you have continuous access to it.
- Entering an incorrect mobile number - the OTP for registration and time-sensitive messages are sent to the mobile number entered. Double-check digits before submission.
- Using a school email that may be deactivated - if the account is likely to be deactivated after Class 12, use a personal and long-term email address so you can receive messages during admission and future correspondence.
Exam centre and language mistakes
Choices related to exam centres and languages are often not changeable after the final submission. Choose carefully and verify options before making the final payment.
- Not filling all 4 centre preferences - if the form asks for multiple preferences, fill all required preference fields; leaving them empty increases the chance of being assigned a distant or inconvenient centre.
- Selecting a language you are not comfortable with - the language of the question paper usually cannot be changed after submission. Choose only those languages you can read well.
- Selecting a regional language at a centre that does not offer it - check the list of centres offering each language option before selecting that language; selecting an unsupported language at your chosen centre will cause issues.
Payment mistakes
Failure or interruption during payment causes uncompleted applications or missing confirmation. Follow secure and stable payment methods.
- Not downloading the payment confirmation / confirmation page - always save or print the confirmation page and transaction receipt. This page is your proof of successful registration until the admit card is issued.
- Making payment and then not completing the form - if payment is processed but the final 'Submit' or 'Preview and Submit' step was not completed, the application is incomplete and treated as not submitted. Verify the application status immediately after payment.
- Using UPI on a slow network near the deadline - to avoid timeouts and failed transactions, use net banking or credit/debit card when the network is slow or near the closing time; allow extra time for payment processing.
What to do if you made an error Minor errors (for example, certain parent-name spellings or other non-critical fields) may be corrected during the official correction window. For this cycle, the correction window is scheduled for 12-14 March 2026. Critical errors such as wrong date of birth, name mismatch with Class 10 certificate, or incorrect category selection may not always be editable online - contact the NTA immediately for guidance. How to verify your application before final submission
Follow this checklist to reduce the risk of rejection or later complications. Verify every item against an original document.
- Name - compare the name on the form with your Class 10 / board certificate exactly, including order, spelling, and initials.
- Date of birth - ensure the DOB matches the primary school/board certificate used for eligibility and future verification.
- Category and certificates - verify category selection and upload valid, state-appropriate, and non-expired certificates (including explicit Non-Creamy Layer statements for OBC where required).
- Photograph and signature - verify background, size, format, and recency; preview the uploaded images before final submission.
- Contact details - check mobile number and email for accuracy and ensure you have access to them during the entire admission cycle.
- Exam centre and language - confirm centre preferences and language choice; check centre availability for your selected language.
- Payment - complete payment and ensure the confirmation page is downloaded or printed; check application status after payment.
If you are called for document verification
Be prepared to present original documents and photocopies in the exact format required. If there were discrepancies submitted earlier, bring documentary evidence to explain and support the correct details.
- Keep originals - Class 10 / board certificate, category/EWS certificate, identity proof (Aadhaar/passport), and recent photograph.
- Bring supporting letters - if there is a name change (for example, due to marriage), carry a legal document proving the change (gazette notification, marriage certificate, or an affidavit) along with the original certificates.
- Follow instructions - the verification authority may allow limited clarifications; present documents calmly and in an organised manner.
Common examples and practical fixes
- Example: If your Class 10 certificate shows "R. K. Sharma" but you entered "Rakesh Kumar Sharma" in a different order, correct the application to match the Class 10 certificate. If correction window is closed, contact the NTA with both documents to request guidance.
- Example: If an uploaded photo is flagged for coloured background, retake the photograph with a plain white background and replace the image before the last submission step.
- Example: If you accidentally selected General instead of SC/ST/OBC, gather your category certificate and contact the helpline immediately. If a correction window is announced, update the field within that period.
