Challenge fee, deadline, how NTA processes objections

What is the provisional answer key?

After the examination, the National Testing Agency (NTA) releases a provisional (preliminary) answer key on neet.nta.nic.in along with each candidate's OMR response sheet. Candidates can compare their recorded responses with the provisional key and raise objections to any question they believe is incorrect within the specified challenge window.

How to check the provisional answer key

  • Visit neet.nta.nic.in once NTA announces the answer key release.
  • Log in with your Application Number and Date of Birth.
  • Your OMR response sheet will be displayed showing your bubbled responses.
  • The provisional answer key for each question is shown alongside the response sheet.
  • Compare your responses with the provisional key question by question.

How to raise a challenge

  • Log in to the NTA NEET portal during the official challenge window (usually 2-4 days after the answer key release).
  • Go to the Answer Key Challenge section.
  • Select the question number you want to challenge.
  • Select the option you believe is the correct answer.
  • Upload supporting evidence if required (for example, an NCERT page reference or a scan of a recognised textbook).
  • Pay the challenge fee per question.
  • Submit the challenge and retain the confirmation receipt shown on screen.

Challenge fee

  • Rs. 200 per question challenged (subject to change - always verify the exact amount from the official NTA notification).
  • The fee is refunded if your challenge is upheld by the expert review.
  • The fee is forfeited if your challenge is rejected.

What happens after you submit a challenge?

  • NTA forwards all challenges to a panel of subject experts for review.
  • If a question is found to have an error, marks for that question are awarded to all candidates as per the corrected key irrespective of which option they marked.
  • NTA's decision after expert review is final and there is normally no further appeal once the final answer key is published.
  • The final answer key is used to calculate results and cut-offs.

NTA's decision on challenges is final and binding

If NTA's expert panel upholds the original key, your challenge will be rejected even if you disagree. Always support any challenge with strong, verifiable textbook evidence - preferably an explicit NCERT reference where applicable.

Practical tips for candidates

  • Download and save your OMR response sheet and the provisional key as soon as they are available.
  • Keep scanned copies or clear photographs of any textbook pages or authoritative references you intend to submit as evidence.
  • Challenge only well-justified items; frivolous or unsupported challenges incur the fee without benefit.
  • Monitor official communications from NTA for exact dates, fee amounts, and final announcements.
