NEET PG Exam  >  NEET PG Notes  >  Medicine  >  Mnemonics: Hepatology

Mnemonics: Hepatology

Child-Pugh Score Components

What needs to be memorized: The 5 parameters used to assess severity of cirrhosis: Albumin, Bilirubin, PT/INR (Prothrombin Time), Ascites, Encephalopathy

Mnemonic: "All Bloody Patients Are Encephalopathic"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • AllAlbumin
  • BloodyBilirubin
  • PatientsPT/INR (Prothrombin Time)
  • AreAscites
  • EncephalopathicEncephalopathy

Common Causes of Cirrhosis

What needs to be memorized: The six most common causes of cirrhosis: Alcohol, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), Autoimmune Hepatitis, Wilson's Disease

Mnemonic: "A Healthy Happy Nation Awaits Wilson"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • AAlcohol
  • HealthyHepatitis B
  • HappyHepatitis C
  • NationNAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)
  • AwaitsAutoimmune Hepatitis
  • WilsonWilson's Disease

Major Complications of Cirrhosis

What needs to be memorized: Six major complications: Portal Hypertension, Ascites, Hepatic Encephalopathy, Hepatorenal Syndrome, Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), Variceal Bleeding

Mnemonic: "Please Avoid Heavy Hepatic Harm, Varices"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • PleasePortal Hypertension
  • AvoidAscites
  • HeavyHepatic Encephalopathy
  • HepaticHepatorenal Syndrome
  • HarmHepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)
  • VaricesVariceal Bleeding

Viral Hepatitis Transmission Routes

What needs to be memorized: Which hepatitis viruses spread by fecal-oral route (Hepatitis A, E) versus parenteral/blood route (Hepatitis B, C, D)

Mnemonic: "Vowels eat, Consonants bleed!"

💡 The Simple Rule:

  • Vowels (A, E)Fecal-Oral route (contaminated food/water - "eating")
  • Consonants (B, C, D)Parenteral/Blood route (blood, needles)

याद रखो: A aur E - paani se aaye, B-C-D - blood se aaye!

Wilson's Disease - Key Diagnostic Features

What needs to be memorized: Five essential features: Kayser-Fleischer rings, Low Ceruloplasmin, High urinary Copper, Liver disease (Cirrhosis), Neuropsychiatric symptoms

Mnemonic: "Wilson = Copper की कहानी: Kayser, Ceruloplas-LOW, Copper-HIGH, Liver, Neuro"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • KayserKayser-Fleischer rings (brown rings in cornea)
  • Ceruloplas-LOWCeruloplasmin LOW (decreased in blood)
  • Copper-HIGHCopper HIGH (increased in urine - 24hr urinary copper)
  • LiverLiver disease (hepatitis/cirrhosis)
  • NeuroNeuropsychiatric symptoms (tremors, behavioral changes)

Clinical Pearl: In Wilson's disease, Copper and Ceruloplasmin are OPPOSITE - Copper ↑ (urine), Ceruloplasmin ↓ (blood)!

Budd-Chiari Syndrome - Classic Triad

What needs to be memorized: The three classic features: Hepatomegaly, Ascites, Abdominal pain

Mnemonic: "HAA!" (हाँ!)

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • HHepatomegaly (enlarged liver)
  • AAscites (fluid in abdomen)
  • AAbdominal pain

याद रखो: Budd-Chiari में patient बोलता है "HAA! Problem hai!" - Hepatomegaly, Ascites, Abdominal pain!

Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis (SBP) - Common Organisms

What needs to be memorized: The three most common organisms: E. coli (most common), Klebsiella, Streptococci

Mnemonic: "SBP = EKS bugs"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • EE. coli (most common - gram negative rod)
  • KKlebsiella (gram negative rod)
  • SStreptococci (gram positive cocci - including S. pneumoniae)

Clinical Pearl: Ascites में infection = EK Special combination yaad rakho!

Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS) - Types

What needs to be memorized: Two types with their characteristics - Type 1 (rapid, severe) and Type 2 (slow, moderate)

Mnemonic: "Type 1 = Fast & Fatal, Type 2 = Slow & Stable"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Type 1 HRSFAST progression (<2 weeks),="">FATAL (poor prognosis), doubling of creatinine
  • Type 2 HRSSLOW progression (>2 weeks), more STABLE (better prognosis), moderate renal impairment

आसान याद: Type EK (1) = एकदम fast aur bad, Type DO (2) = धीरे-धीरे aur decent prognosis!

Acute Liver Failure - Common Causes

What needs to be memorized: Five major causes in India: Viral Hepatitis, Drug-induced (especially Paracetamol), Wilson's Disease, Autoimmune Hepatitis, Budd-Chiari Syndrome

Mnemonic: "Very Deadly Wasps Attack Bodies"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • VeryViral Hepatitis (especially A, B, E in India)
  • DeadlyDrug-induced (Paracetamol overdose, ATT drugs)
  • WaspsWilson's Disease
  • AttackAutoimmune Hepatitis
  • BodiesBudd-Chiari Syndrome

MELD Score Components

What needs to be memorized: The 3 laboratory parameters used in MELD score calculation: Bilirubin, INR, Creatinine

Mnemonic: "MELD = BIC (like the pen!)"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • BBilirubin (total bilirubin)
  • IINR (International Normalized Ratio)
  • CCreatinine (serum creatinine)

Super simple: BIC pen की तरह याद रखो - MELD score needs these 3 labs!
