Mnemonics: The placenta and fetal membranes

Functions of the Placenta

What needs to be memorized: Nutrition, Respiration, Excretion, Endocrine, Barrier/Protection, Storage

Mnemonic: "Never Run Exams Empty, Bring Snacks"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Never → Nutrition (provides nutrients to fetus)
  • Run → Respiration (gas exchange - O₂ and CO₂)
  • Exams → Excretion (removes fetal waste products)
  • Empty → Endocrine (produces hormones)
  • Bring → Barrier/Protection (immunological barrier)
  • Snacks → Storage (stores nutrients like glycogen)

Placental Hormones (Major Four)

What needs to be memorized: hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin), hPL (human Placental Lactogen), Estrogen, Progesterone

Mnemonic: "Cricket Players Eat Paneer"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Cricket → hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
  • Players → hPL (human Placental Lactogen)
  • Eat → Estrogen
  • Paneer → Progesterone

Components of Umbilical Cord

What needs to be memorized: 2 Umbilical Arteries, 1 Umbilical Vein, Wharton's Jelly

Mnemonic: "Two Artists, One Viewer, Whole jelly between them"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Two ArtistsTwo Arteries (carry deoxygenated blood from fetus to placenta)
  • One ViewerOne Vein (carries oxygenated blood from placenta to fetus)
  • Whole jellyWharton's jelly (protective gelatinous substance)

💡 Extra Tip: Remember it's ULTA (opposite) in umbilical cord - Arteries carry Away deoxygenated blood, Vein brings Vital oxygenated blood!

Human Placenta - Four Key Characteristics

What needs to be memorized: Hemochorial, Deciduate, Discoid, Villous

Mnemonic: "Hema Decides Disco Vibes"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • HemaHemochorial (maternal blood directly contacts fetal trophoblast)
  • DecidesDeciduate (decidua is shed at delivery)
  • DiscoDiscoid (disc-shaped)
  • VibesVillous (has chorionic villi)

Fetal Membranes - Which is Inside, Which is Outside?

What needs to be memorized: Amnion (innermost - touching baby), Chorion (outer fetal membrane)

Mnemonic: "Amnion Andar, Chorion Cover"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Amnion Andar → Amnion is inside, directly touching the baby and containing amniotic fluid
  • Chorion Cover → Chorion is the outer covering (outermost fetal membrane)

💡 Think: Amnion has the Amniotic fluid that baby swims in, so it must be touching the baby!

Abnormal Placentation - Accreta/Increta/Percreta (Increasing Depth)

What needs to be memorized: Placenta Accreta (attached to myometrium), Placenta Increta (invades into myometrium), Placenta Percreta (penetrates through myometrium)

Mnemonic: "A-I-P: Attached → Invades → Penetrates"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Accreta → Attached (abnormally adheres to myometrium surface - least severe)
  • Increta → Invades INto the myometrium (medium severity)
  • Percreta → Penetrates/Perforates completely through (can reach bladder - most severe)

💡 Remember: A-I-P means going deeper and deeper - like digging from surface to complete penetration!

Placental Barrier Layers (Fetal Blood to Maternal Blood)

What needs to be memorized: Fetal capillary Endothelium, Connective tissue, Cytotrophoblast, Syncytiotrophoblast (in order from fetal to maternal side)

Mnemonic: "Every Connection Creates Safety"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Every → Endothelium (fetal capillary endothelium)
  • Connection → Connective tissue (of the villus)
  • Creates → Cytotrophoblast (Hofbauer cells; disappears after 20 weeks)
  • Safety → Syncytiotrophoblast (in contact with maternal blood)

💡 Note: After 20 weeks, cytotrophoblast disappears, leaving only 3 layers!

Umbilical Blood Vessels - What Carries What

What needs to be memorized: Umbilical Arteries carry deoxygenated blood (fetus to placenta), Umbilical Vein carries oxygenated blood (placenta to fetus)

Mnemonic: "Umbilical cord mein sab ULTA! - Arteries Away, Vein is Vital"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Arteries Away → Arteries carry deoxygenated blood Away from fetus (opposite of normal arteries!)
  • Vein is Vital → Vein carries Vital oxygenated blood to the fetus (opposite of normal veins!)

💡 Key Concept: In umbilical circulation, everything is ULTA (reversed) compared to normal body circulation. This is super high-yield for NEET PG!

Placental Development Timeline - Key Weeks

What needs to be memorized: Week 2 (Primary villi form), Week 3 (Tertiary villi with blood vessels), Week 12 (Placenta fully formed and functional)

Mnemonic: "Do-Teen-Barah: Primary, Tertiary complete, Placenta Barah"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Do (2) → Week 2: Primary villi appear
  • Teen (3) → Week 3: Tertiary villi form (with blood vessels - complete structure)
  • Barah (12) → Week 12: Placenta fully formed and functional

💡 Remember: 2-3-12 pattern - Primary becomes complete (tertiary) quickly, but full function takes till 12 weeks!
