Mnemonics: Neuroradiology

Ring-Enhancing Lesions in Brain (on Contrast CT/MRI)

What needs to be memorized: Abscess, Tuberculoma, Toxoplasmosis, Glioblastoma multiforme, Metastasis, Resolving hematoma, Radiation necrosis, Cysticercosis

Mnemonic: "A Talented Teacher Gave Me Really Ripe Coconut"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • A Talented → Abscess
  • A Talented → Tuberculoma
  • A Talented Teacher → Toxoplasmosis
  • A Talented Teacher Gave → Glioblastoma multiforme
  • A Talented Teacher Gave Me → Metastasis
  • A Talented Teacher Gave Me Really → Resolving hematoma
  • A Talented Teacher Gave Me Really Ripe → Radiation necrosis
  • A Talented Teacher Gave Me Really Ripe Coconut → Cysticercosis

💡 Pro Tip: Remember this like getting a gift from your favorite teacher - it helps recall both infectious causes (abscess, TB, toxo, cysticercosis) and neoplastic causes (GBM, mets) together!

Posterior Fossa Tumors in Children (Most Common)

What needs to be memorized: Medulloblastoma, Pilocytic astrocytoma, Ependymoma, Brainstem glioma

Mnemonic: "My Papa Enjoys Biryani"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • My → Medulloblastoma (most common posterior fossa tumor)
  • My Papa → Pilocytic astrocytoma (cerebellar)
  • My Papa Enjoys → Ependymoma
  • My Papa Enjoys Biryani → Brainstem glioma

💡 Clinical Correlation: Medulloblastoma (M comes first) is indeed the MOST common - just like everyone's papa enjoying biryani is most common at family gatherings!

Sellar and Suprasellar Masses

What needs to be memorized: Sarcoid/Sella metastasis, Adenoma (pituitary), Teratoma, Craniopharyngioma, Hypothalamic glioma, Meningioma, Optic glioma

Mnemonic: "Sachin Always Takes Catches - His Most Outstanding"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Sachin → Sarcoid / Sella metastasis
  • Sachin Always → Adenoma (pituitary - most common sellar mass)
  • Sachin Always Takes → Teratoma
  • Sachin Always Takes Catches → Craniopharyngioma
  • Sachin Always Takes Catches - His → Hypothalamic glioma
  • Sachin Always Takes Catches - His Most → Meningioma
  • Sachin Always Takes Catches - His Most Outstanding → Optic glioma

💡 Think of Sachin Tendulkar's legendary catches - just like these lesions "catch" the sellar/suprasellar region!

Differential Diagnosis of Brainstem Lesions

What needs to be memorized: Demyelination (MS), Tumor (glioma), Infarct, Hemorrhage, Abscess, Cavernoma

Mnemonic: "During Test India Hit A Century"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • During → Demyelination (Multiple Sclerosis)
  • During Test → Tumor (especially glioma)
  • During Test India → Infarct
  • During Test India Hit → Hemorrhage
  • During Test India Hit AAbscess
  • During Test India Hit A Century → Cavernoma

💡 Remember: When you see a brainstem lesion, run through this differential like India running between wickets to score a century!

Types of Skull Fractures

What needs to be memorized: Linear, Depressed, Comminuted, Diastatic

Mnemonic: "Lunch Dabbas Come Daily"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Lunch → Linear fracture (simple crack line)
  • Lunch Dabbas → Depressed fracture (pushed inward like a dent in dabba)
  • Lunch Dabbas Come → Comminuted fracture (multiple fragments)
  • Lunch Dabbas Come Daily → Diastatic fracture (widening of sutures)

💡 Visual memory: Imagine different types of damage to your lunch dabba - simple crack (linear), dent (depressed), shattered (comminuted), lid separated (diastatic)!

Causes of Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH)

What needs to be memorized: Hypertension, AVM (arteriovenous malformation), Aneurysm rupture, Tumor, Trauma

Mnemonic: "Har Aam Aadmi Takes Tension"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Har → Hypertension (most common cause)
  • Har Aam → AVM
  • Har Aam Aadmi → Aneurysm rupture
  • Har Aam Aadmi Takes → Tumor
  • Har Aam Aadmi Takes Tension → Trauma

💡 Clinical Pearl: "Tension" (stress/hypertension) is the most common cause - fitting for the mnemonic! Think of blood under pressure entering the ventricles.

Leptomeningeal Enhancement - Causes

What needs to be memorized: Meningitis (infectious), Carcinomatosis, Sarcoidosis, Tuberculosis

Mnemonic: "Medical College Students Taught"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Medical → Meningitis (bacterial, viral, fungal)
  • Medical College → Carcinomatosis (leptomeningeal carcinomatosis)
  • Medical College Students → Sarcoidosis
  • Medical College Students Taught → Tuberculosis (TB meningitis)

💡 Remember: Medical students are taught about these causes of "pia-arachnoid" enhancement - the teaching layers of meninges!

FLAIR Sequence Hyperintensities (Bright on FLAIR)

What needs to be memorized: CSF pathology, Edema, Demyelination, Infarct (subacute), Gliosis

Mnemonic: "Cricket Exam Dene India Gaya"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Cricket → CSF pathology (infection, hemorrhage, high protein)
  • Cricket Exam → Edema (vasogenic/cytotoxic)
  • Cricket Exam Dene → Demyelination (MS plaques)
  • Cricket Exam Dene India → Infarct (subacute - after 24 hours)
  • Cricket Exam Dene India Gaya → Gliosis (chronic changes)

💡 FLAIR suppresses normal CSF (makes it dark) but shows abnormal CSF and water content as bright - like how exams highlight what you know!

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) - Classic Triad

What needs to be memorized: Gait disturbance (ataxia/magnetic gait), Urinary incontinence, Dementia (cognitive decline)

Mnemonic: "Wet, Wobbly, Wacky" (Classic) OR "Walk nahi, Washroom control nahi, Wits slow"

🔗 The Breakdown:

  • Wet → Urinary incontinence (patient is "wet" from urine)
  • Wobbly → Gait disturbance (wobbly, magnetic walking)
  • Wacky → Dementia (wacky thinking, cognitive decline)

Indian Context Version:

  • Walk nahi hota → Gait ataxia
  • Washroom control nahi → Urinary incontinence
  • Wits slow hote → Dementia

💡 Clinical Pearl: Remember the sequence - problems typically appear in order: Gait → Urinary → Cognitive. Also remember: NPH is potentially REVERSIBLE with shunt - hence "Wet, Wobbly, Wacky can go back!"
